A clear northbound M40, no rush, just cruising from A to B. I admit I normally drive at 80mph on a ideal day.

Sun blazing, light traffic, I was doing about 85mph, middle lane as the lorries in the inside lane were all that needed to be passed on this occassion. Before I spotted th Police ML on the bridge ahead my Road Angel's Laser alert went into full alarm.

I hit the brakes and made a swift sideways manouver into the inside lane (still nothing immediately in front of me unfortunatly) as I ammended my speed to just under 70mph.

The instant the Road Angel went off my foot was hard on the brakes, but the alert carried on way after I had changed lane and was travelling below the speed limit, as if the Officer was still tracking me.

As I passed under the bridge the Officer seemed to have stopped playing with his gun and was putting it on the passender seat of the ML - is this a sign that he was feting a print out or something from another bit of kit in the car??

Will the impact of me changing my speed by warning of seeing the officer be enough for him or do you think my highest recorded speed will be all that matters?

The thought of getting any points from such an innocent journey really makes me mad.

Any tit bits of info to ease (or not) my mind, please share!!

Never had any chance to be alerted by the RA in this way when I had it . . . . . but I expect its probably programmed to sound the alarm for a set period of time, if it detects any laser activity.

Regardless of that, if it went off when you were still doing 85, then I guess it would have been too late :(

Hopefully not 'eh.

I considered that Sym, but recall when I tested it it didn't. Don't have my Sky TV remote any more (used to activate it) so can't test.

Can anyone test this for me?

This is a right pain. Still not convinced I should get a jammer though. As I understand it they jam each time they are set off, for a brief period for you to slow down? The trouble is it does this whether you are speeding or not - I am sure I would alert more interest if this happened everytime I was lasered, speeding or not.

All this grief from an ML driver too!

Don't worry, it depends what he had it set to. With a bit of luck and a fair wind he had it set to 85mph and you would not have been over it eh mate. :)

From the Traffic Cops programs I've watched on TV, on a clear day on a motorway they wouldn't be interested in people just doing 85.

Good luck Graham though, hope you'll be ok.

Thanks, Richard/All, I hope you are right.

The waiting game is the worst bit. I think at times like this the Road Angel has made me more paranoid - I KNOW I was being measured, I know I was over the limit, but at that moment I was possibly the fastest travelling car in the Officers sights and was I in or out of the tolerances.

I shall let you know!

I am still interested if anyone can figure out how long a Road Angel alerts for on the laser - does it only sound while being hit by laser or does one trip sound for a set period?

When do they become interested?

I know fixed cameras are a bit different but I got done on the M6 going 88 (got a road pilot the next day) - at least I learned my speedo was 2mph off... :D

I spent a day with the Police on the M20/M25 they seemed to take a reasonable view. You would only get pulled at 71mph for a chat if your driving or you're car warranted a look. So a tailgating fiat panda needs to be careful at 70. Upto 80 on a quiet road with no reason to pull such as eratic driving or a dodgy tyre they are not very likely to pull .80-85 pushing it and therefore a sudden movement, bad indicating, not liking the colour of your car and you are likely to get pulled. 85-100 you will get pulled if they have the time. 100mph and its a ban and if youre in kent prison.

Cameras are "usually" set to 10% plus 3 so 70mph +10% +3 =80. Cameras dont care if it was a quiet sunny day with no one near you.

We need traffic Police to get the lunatics off the road and stop the cars with tyres through to the metal, like I witnessed with my own eyes! In my experience both in their car and being pulled over, traffic Police take a fair view. Cameras dont.

Since this government came traffic Police have fallen by 12% but camera numbers have gone through the roof.

At the end of the day its completely down to the police officer on duty, some have a very lenient view, others don't.

Graham I would test my Road Angel for you but I've never got it to trigger with the Sky remote, the old one or the new one.

The other point to consider, is that your speedo id probably between 5 and 10% adrift, so your indicated 85mph could have been as low as 77mph.

Good luck though all the same

Hi

I am in the same boat mate.

Regards

In my experiance(got pulled by the fuzz doing 103 on the m1 in my old XR4I)If they were going to pull you, then they would have done it there and then.

I got gunned from an overpass, they then radio'd a car further down the m'way which then pulled me over.

I managed to keep my licence because i needed it for my job. And i had a wizard of a solicitor  They took my licence up to nine points so i had to drive very carefully for the next three years!!!!!!!!! :p

Dont know if this helps but posted same experience on another post, was driving back from dover was doing 90mph suddenly my head lights lit up a police car sitting on there little ramp pointing a spped gun at me. Slammed on the brakes, and expected a them to come pull me, well they didn't and heard nothing that was 4 months ago. So you may be fine. But I know that feeling of waiting! Hope you hear nothing mate! ;)

I forgot to mention, I meant 85mph as dispalyed by the GPS on the Road Angel.

We shall see anyway.

have you tried phoning the road angel people?

Also, to test the laser try sending a business card by infra red from your mobile phone. My B2 didnt respond to any remote controls - but origin told me about the phone trick .. and it works.

tested it last saturday as the police were pointing a laser gun our of a van on a Mway bridge but nothing went off . the laser alert worked fine on the test so I guess I was not actually being fired at .

oh, I actually have a laser diffuser and would not be concerned if it activated at legal speeds - the police just cant get a reading (which can be caused by numerous non jammer related factors) so they try again by which time the units has shut down .. they gets a reading and all is well.
