So:

A while back down my local tyre shop there was a old Skyline (R33 or something I know nothing about Skylines) but it had a gated 4 speed box in a Ferrari stylee. What advantage would be gained by dumping the original 5 / 6 speed for a 4 speed ? Is it something to do with drifting or dragging ??????

and secondly

A few years ago when I scrapped my old Luton Van my mechanic said I should take the gearbox out and put it on ebay as the vintage beemer boys would snap it up apparently it was a dog leg getrag and they were adaptable and could be fitted to old straight six bmw engines. I didnt bother in the end but what advantage would fitting a gearbox from a diesel van have on a 6 pot petrol car ????

thoughts ???

:)

You could be right about drifting or dragging……maybe it's just a means to better acceleration with lower gearing (and to keep the turbo spinning to eliminate lag?). The Luton gearbox; was it stronger than the BMW, maybe?

Dog leg Getrag is what was fitted to Chevette HS, Lotus Sunbeam and BMW M-cars.
The advantage is less side ways lever moves whilst "racing".

It was my understanding the the manual 6 series beemer had a dog leg getrag out the box so my question relates to the gearing of the diesel box and what effect that would have mated to a petrol engine ??

The dog leg Getrag box`would have been a close ratio 5sp - as opposed to either a 4sp or 5sp with 5th as an overdrive.
Unless your man was talking tosh, then assume the internal ratios were as BMW would have used, and final gearing petrol to Diesel, car to van, would be via final drive ratios ie, diff.
