C63 AMG Estate & CLK55 AMG Convertible.

The idea to buy a W/S204 C63 started a year or so ago.

It came about as my wife and I were discussing selling the CLK55 cabriolet, due to lack of use. A glib comment that the W202 C36 was not doing much more miles and why don't we toss a coin to see which we would advertise for sale.
Not wanting to lose my C36 I suggested, that if we were going to advertise, we would advertise both and keep whichever does not sell. Secretly harbouring the notion a top end priced C36 would not find a home easily.
This led to the train of thought, but if I did sell, what would I buy?
Always liked the C63, I had a 2012/13 C220D Sport company car back in the day and would pore over a C63 while my diseasel was being serviced.

Around the time the sell it/keep it notion was swaying, I bought a S202 C43 AMG estate from a friend, it needed a little love (& a 5.4Ltr conversion, but that’s another story). The longer term plan had been to use the C43 for days out taking the dogs (3 beagles). While we have covers and restraints if they are in the CLK or C36, hair still manages to get everywhere.

By the time the C43 was finished, my mind had wandered again, this time to the fact the C43 deserved to live in a garage and not on the drive. So I sold it, and bought a S203 C55 AMG estate.

It was getting more use than the CLK55 & C36 combined.

A new plan was forming, advertise the CLK55 & C36 to fund a S204 C63, with the C55 being moved on later.

My man maths, were thinking sub £20k pre-facelift, as even on a very good day the CLK55 with 55,000miles would only make £14k(ish), so I would have to dip into some savings.

The bit that caught me off guard, was the C36 sold quickly and for strong money (& no sniffs on the CLK55!).

I was in a much better position and drew up my wish list, I say wish list, it was quite simple;

Any colour, facelift, preferably not messed about with, full history and PPP if I could find one. I was in no rush and could bide my time.

Looked at a few, and nothing was grabbing me. Despite the market being deflated, there were some ambitious pricing.

First week of June I was away with work at a trade exhibition and staying in Leamington Spa. After a long day on the show stand, then a meal out and a few scoops I returned to my hotel. Thought I would have a quick look on Ebay and AutoTrader for any new listings. There it was, 2011, Silver with black leather, PPP & 19” multispokes. Up for a not unreasonable £22,500. I sent my wife the link, oh and also put a slightly cheeky Best Offer in, just to start a conversation.

Awaking at 06:00 I am met with a “Congratulations on your purchase” Now then, I was not drunk, but my wife knows I have a history of drunk ebay purchases. We are not just talking run of the mills stuff. Some of my more notables are a 1999 Crown Vic Police Car, still in Desoto Texas... 1969 Mercury Cougar, Mohave Desert...1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator, scrapyard Sheffield!... Jeep Wagoneer, Italian registered in London… so I have form.

Anyhoo, a chat with the seller, hes going to put a fresh MOT on the next week and we would look at getting it delivered up (300+miles). We cant quite make our diaries match, so last Friday afternoon, I hopped on the train in Preston, arriving in Canterbury some 4hrs later. Crappy nights sleep in a Premier Inn, seller picks me up the next morning. Sale completed and I’m on my way home. The weather was that bad, the whole journey, I managed to average 26mpg!

Drove great, sounds awesome.

Very nice. Congrats 👏

Lovely car!! Silver is great in them!!
I wish I had your success with the cheeky ebay bids though 😆🤪
Health to drive!!

Very nice looking motor - I hadn't realised the facelift cars had the integrated screen - I was never a fan of the pop-up screen on the earlier cars & the one I had considered before I bought my E63 had the older interior.
Enjoy..!!

While the history was large, one thing I could not find had been changed was the injectors. Over my years of owning cars, its not something that popped up on my radar as being an issue, but the web seems to be bent out of shape about M156 injectors failing and causing big ticket damage. For the sake of £200(ish), I wasn't going to chance them.
One of the bargaining points when buying was the rear brakes would need replacing in the near future. While ordering from AutoDoc, I also ordered injectors. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, I should have ordered them separately, foolishly I thought someone in packing would have twigged that 30kg of brakes and 8x delicate injectors in the same box to make a 600+ mile journey was not a good idea, evidently not...

53824031262_1eeebce777_k (1).jpg

Anyone who has used AutoDoc will pretty much agree, prices are good (better on the App.), delivery so-so, returns a nightmare, even if they slip in the £3.95 returns extension.
Contacted them to say they were damaged on arrival, sent pictures, they wanted more pictures, sent more pictures. they wanted pictures of the actual damage to the injectors. By now my (already short) patience was being tested. I explained they were delicate electronic items and damage may not be visible. I was just about to get my credit card company involved and they sent me a returns number.
Anyhoo, replacements landed and a couple of hours later job, jobbed.

Engine and gearbox services are recent, so next preventative maintenance jobs will be drive belt and pulleys & power steering reservoir/filter.

Small win this afternoon.
The multi-contour seats didn't work when I got the C63.
I didn't have a fuse location sheet. So had googled and a suggestion of which fuse in the boot, I checked and was fine.
This afternoon I was making a new fly lead to the battery, to keep it charged while in the garage.
While putting the trim back in, I was idly looking at the fuses and noticed a solitary 5A fuse a little away from where I had believed the seat fuse to be, this lonely fuse was blown.
Replaced it with a good one and both the seats now function fully and correctly.
I will monitor it, as there will be reason for it blowing originally, hopefully it was just someone keeping the button pressed to long.

Congratulations on your new purchase, lots of smile per gallon to come 🥳🫶👍

Congratulations! Keep the posts coming !

One thing that was mildly annoying was the controller for the multimedia, if you tried to rotate the controller too fast it would skip. Apparently the plastic shaft in the middle breaks, ebay full of repair kits with aluminium shaft (I expect that will pass stress onto another component, but we will worry about that down the road of time).

Something I had toyed with was updating the NTG4.5 Comand. Early facelift have a yellowish tinge (papyrus) . But then I was going to be throwing money at a visual and no improvement to the nav system. I'm rather a fan of Waze for navigation. I did look at the NTG4.5 upgrade offered by forum sponsor, but I was a little put off by the coding dongle and went for a plug and play.
The fitting was straight forward, though not a lot of room in the console area to place the module.
I liked that I could upload a wallpaper for one screen and it mirrors my phone for the other.

Nice! More detail and ball park on the audio change would be helpful? Did you fit it yourself?

I did. The module came from K-tech Modules.
Very straight forward, other than a lack of space at the back for the loom and module. I ended up dropping the glovebox to get as much loom there and the module.
Module was a bout £220. if you don't have any trim removal tool and a little hook tool to get the centre vent out, its probably worth getting their kitting kit to (£9).
You can change the wallpaper screen by adding your chosen jpg. (didn't want to recognise a .png) to a USB.

Cheers. Why didn't you go for the wireless one - are there downsides?

Had a few days booked off work, so apart from some stuff around the house, I had a few preventative maintenance jobs I wanted to do on the C63;
One thing that had niggled me since I fitted the android module, was the AMG logo I uploaded was a little too high, so a bit of messing in MS paint and it now sits clear of the icons.

54084861956_32e77faafe_k.jpg

Next up was the rear pads and discs I bought a while ago.
Once they were done, it was onto the drive pullies, tensioner & belt.
I had also bought a new PAS reservoir, as I believe it has a built in, non replaceable filter.
A new set of spark plugs completed the engine based work for now.

54088751864_5ec6aac6cc_k.jpg

Giving it a bit of a pre-winter clean with the arch liners off, the O/S engine oil cooler was looking a bit crudded up, with road detritus. I couldn't see how to get to the front without removing the bumper.
So, having soaked it in engine degreaser and then 4 large tins of brake cleaner sprayed from the back, finally washed through with another dose of degreaser until the water ran clear, all the fins now nice and clear.

54094796739_ace178a102_k.jpg

The only other preventative maintenance job I had planned, but didn't get time was the PCV valve. That can wait until after my run to Anglesey for Remembrance weekend.
While its SORN'd over winter, I also plan to have the calipers checked over and re-painted/powdercoated by BCS.

While having a bit of a tidy up in the garage, I happened across Buzz and Woody figures, from Toy Story. When we had the motorhome to tow the race car, and the kids were younger, they hung off the back bumper.
Now adorn the BTCC front bumper.

Enjoyed reading, excellent preventative servicing measures. Judging by the grey coloured intake manifold, looks like you have the 507 edition or equivalent? Do correct me if I'm wrong.
