Few questions please (I did search but could not find what I need) I am able to access the engineering menu

1) Determine map version installed. The Database Information Screen says: Map Navteq ES1240-00 10Q2
2) Pretty sure it is 4.5 and not 4.7 - how do I confirm that?
3) Says my phone not supported to get on t'internet - I have a Huawei Pro 20 running Android 9

Many thanks

The official maps version is on the main screen (not in hidden menu), under NAVI on the top left side, Information.

10Q2 is the version of the cartography data that the MB maps were prepared from. It means Q2 in 2010. So the MB maps themselves would be dated around 2011-2012.

It would seem that these are the original maps supplied with the car, i.e. the maps were never updated? The current version is 2019/2020 v19.0.

NTG4.5 Gen3 (aka NTG4.7) was introduced in 2013, so - based on the cartography date - your car will likely be MY 2011 or 2012 and will have either NTG4.5 Gen1 or NTG4.5 Gen2 (but not NTG4.7).

Was just about to type I have found the map version - 2011!!! Guess previous owner never bothered. Can I leap straight to the latest?

Many thanks Mark

If the version is higher than v4 then yes.

The maps version will be displayed as both a year and a version number, e.g.:
Map version: EUROPE 2011/2012 V5.0

I think there may have been some issues when updating directly from V4.0, but I am not sure.

With regards connecting COMAND to the Internet via your Android phone, make sure that on your phone under Settings, Connections, Mobile Hotspot and Tethering, Bluetooth Tethering is switched to ON.

That said, I am not sure if your phone is compatible with COMAND or not. A firmware update to the COMAND unit might also help, but this is a job for Comand UK (or a dealer) so will need to wait until after the lockdown...

You might not want to bother with the Internet bit.... I spent ages getting my phone to provide an internet connection with NTG 4.7.

Eventually got there (Huawei P30, Android 10) and now I can extremely slowly use a browser and check the weather (again very slowly). The user interface for entering text is far slower than a phone and the Internet is provided by Bluetooth tethering and DUN (Dial Up Networking). Even with a good 4G signal expect a webpage to load in 5 seconds or more.

Saying "Hey Google what's the weather" with my phone my pocket beats the car hands down.

I use the Internet Radio app quite frequently.

I have the TuneIn app on my mobile phone and it synchronises with the Internet Radio on COMAND so I have all my favourite stations.

But you need to have an interest in Internet radio stations for this feature to be of value.

Other than that, the weather app is mildly useful, not much else.

The browser is 10 years old and won't access most modern websites anyway.

All of the Google stuff has been discontinued as of 2015.

You can still send a destination to the car from your home PC, but the process is cumbersome and has no real advantage over just keying-in the post code directly into COMAND in the car.

Of course, mine is V4.0!! Do you recall what the issues were please?

Sadly no.... :(

I just remember reading something online about it.

Worth a shot... you can download v19.0 for free from MB, once you start the installation it will prompt you for a pin code. At this point you can cancel the installation, but this proves that it is likely to work. You can then purchase the pin code online e.g. from www.comandonline.co.uk and repeat the process.

Sorry Mark - I did try searching and can't find the download link. Could I ask you to repeat it please?

FOUND IT!

Thanks

There's a link for the Mercedes Download Manager (v1.0.16) for COMAND in post #59 in this thread:

Username and password are DLM/DLM.

Incidentally, I believe that v4.0 was the first production release, which means that your car has a very early unit, and so it would be NTG4.5 Gen1.
