Hi, just a quick one, I know my query must have been asked before but I cant find any thread that answers my question. my question is, can I swap NTG4 to NTG4.5/7?
If yes, do I need to change the screen as well or just the head unit?
I've got just the standard unit and on eBay, there are a lot of 4.5/7 which I preferred to the standard. Thanks in advance.

That's an interesting one.

As far as I can see, during it's long production run between 2009 and 2017 (with a facelift in 2013), the A/C207 had NTG4, NTG2.5, NTG4.5, and NTG5*1....

I am assuming your car is the pre-facelift, so the question is if COMAND can be updated from the pre-facelift model to one of the units used on the facelift (NTG4.5 or NTG5*1).

I don't know the answer, but I think it will depend on whether MB will allow SCN coding of NTG4.5 or NTG5*1 to a pre-facelift.

thanks markjay for your quick response, maybe someone has tried it before and may be able to help or share the experience.

At least with NTG4 you can use "second user" DVD's to update the maps, you do not need a PIN from MB/specialist as well as the DVD's, so NTG4 is rather cheaper to update, and MB are still issuing map updates (I have NTG4 in my S204 and have the latest maps, whereas the NTG2.5 in my SLK has the last update MB will issue, 2018-19). Also IIRC the later Comands from NTG4.5 onward are coded to the car, so installing a second hand unit may involve some STAR fettling - if it's possible. Your best bet is to contact @Alfie at comand.co.uk who are MB ICE gurus and forum sponsors, have your VIN handy so they can look up the build sheet for your car, they're a couple of miles from J3 M3 (Lightwater, Surrey) so possibly not too far from you.

Depends on the model year. The issue is that you have to complete 'Initial Startup' in Xentry Diagnosis (online) to update Mercedes VeDOK to show your car has NTG4.5, otherwise you can not get a PIN code to load the map.

You'll need an anti-theft code with any unit you buy. You'll also need screen wiring, USB port etc etc

Richard

Thanks Richard - I tagged Mark for this thread without thinking! As I suspected, there's rather more to swopping NTG4 to a later version, suspect if the OP asks you for a quote for all that is required (which I'm confident you can provide/install) he'll have second thoughts!!

Great to have on board of this thread,
1. how do I complete the initial startup in xentry diagnosis? is it something that you or anyone can help? if yes. can you cost it pls.
2. will I need the anti-theft code from the seller? or it has to be a brand new code and if so where can I get one?
the seller told me he will provide the VIN number of the vehicle, will that be needed?

As each unit (of that type) is coded to the car, you will need the anti-theft code from the seller - I'm sure I've seen posts before where someone has bought a second hand unit, not got the anti-theft code from the seller and then has problems getting the unit to work. Richard/Alfie(Mark) at comand.co.uk is your best bet, pretty sure they have Xentry. Give them a call!!

I've just found a copy of a xentry text log among a bunch of papers in a folder inside the booth, but I don't know if it's enough for me to go ahead with the swap. need help/tutorial/ideas please.

Is this Genuine STAR/Xentry with active subscription that allows you to connect online to the MB central computer over the Internet? Or is this a clone? You'll need the former.

Chris - looks like I have NTG 4 in my 2009 e350 coupe - could I ask where you got the update map disk from - I'm struggling to find anywhere that sells it other than a silly price from MB Thanks in advance.

I buy them either from one of the 2 MB forums I frequent or from Ebay - but be aware there are 2 versions of NTG4 update DVD's - NTG4-204 for the W/S204 and NTG4-211 (I think) for the E class, make sure you're looking at the correct one for your E class! Second user and a year or 2 "out of date" is a hell of a lot cheaper than the latest DVD's from MB or someone like comandonline.co.uk, installation is easy but on mine takes about 2 1/4 hours to load both DVD's so I start the engine, connect a battery charger then switch the engine off but leave ignition on so Comand does not shut down - although if Comand does shut down, soon as you power on again it will resume the update. Plus. of course, once you've installed the update you can sell the DVD's on!!
BTW, some will raise eyebrows about using "second user" DVD's as the installation licence with the DVD's is for single use only, but it's so much more cost effective than MB's stupid price and how would they ever find out! I've updated my NTG4 more than once for a net cost of less than £50 - apart from when I had to get comand.co.uk to replace the HDD as mine is a very early (July 2008) NTG4 where the nav partition was too small for updates later than 2015, cost me about £500 for comand.co.uk to fix that and get the 2018-19 maps and the ability to further update sorted! As your E is 2009 you should not have that particular problem (I hope!).

Cheers Chris - I did some looking on Ebay and came across the different NTG4 options and asked for how to work that out - had had post from another chap with what to look for so will check that in the morning. I think mine is an NTG4 Audio 50 (I just realised I had the manual in the nice leather wallet so a bit of a duh for me.. :) )

Edit: Does this look like the droid....er...disc I'm looking for?

To my eyes that looks like a pirate copy rather than genuine MB, and there are quite a few horror stories about pirate copies crashing and bricking Comand systems. Personally I would only look for genuine MB items.
