I there,
I would like to know if I am on the right path. I have a 1999 clk200 sports manual and I'm trying to figure out what OBD sensor I need.

Am I correct in saying that the OBD port in the on in my engine bay in the left hand side if you are sitting in the car. It is a circulate port.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanking you

If there is no OBD2 port in close proximity to the steering wheel, mine is near my right knee, then chances are you only have the OBD1 port.

I'm not sure when the crossover was for Merc, so I may be wrong.

It is the round one under the bonnet

Thanks for the reply guys, that's where I first had a look but I may have left an important piece of information out, I am from New Zealand so would this matter? I did find a round port in the engine bay up by the fire wall on the passengers side ( which would be the drivers side in the UK )

If this is it, what type of sensor would I need to purchase?

Thanks again for tuning in and giving me some advise.

Cheers,
Brian

location shouldn't matter for the locale, as I believe it was a requirement of OBD2 ports to be within some small distance from the steering wheel. I know I had similar issues with BMWs, as it seems they started with the 7s, then 5s, then 3s, in adding them to the model line up, especially for existing models. So it might be the same that the C of any designation was a low priority.

I thought we both drove on the (correct) left side?:D

Sorry, for some silly reason I though you guys drove on the other side of the road.

So if it is the round port I need. Can someone tell me what the name of it is? Is it OBD1?

We currently drive on the left but if the EU get their way............:D

I think that OBD1 and 2 ports are both rectangular, you can get a convertor for the 38 pin round port you have.

EBay have them.

Trademe doesn't have any either. Problem is that a lot of things are blocked on ebay if you want them in NZ.

Though indies aren't too expensive for diag in NZ, even main dealers I think. I had my 525i on the diagnostics at coombes johnston BMW at Mount Maunganui and it was only $15, that was about 10 years ago though.

The name is Mercedes-Benz 38 pin Diagnostic Connector.
This is marque peculiar and is not the same as ALDL/OBD/OBDII/EOBD/JOBD, etc.
Have you thought about what you are going to read/scan with - there are many options.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I picked up a OBD2 can-bus scanning tool and 38-16 pin adaptor on trademe for $42 hope to pick it up today and start making some progress in this merc.

Thanks again,
Brian

Oh yeah, good call, didn't see that when I looked yesterday. That looks right, and great price too.

Bravo Brian, don't forget to report back with your findings as your experiences of hardware/software/adaptors etc could well be of great interest to many forum members.

Thanks for the support guys. Lady has not been in touch with me as to when I can pick it up. Will keep an update when I start to have a play with it.

Cheers,
Brian

Update,
I have I have installed the ELM 327 with all the com ports 4,7 and 8. Also installed the scan bus program and have and the 38-16 pin adaptor hooked up the the ELM327. I have everything hooked up and ready to go but there is a problem.

The scan tool asks if my vehicle is compatible with OBD2? It won't read any codes.

Is my engine OBD2 compatible? I thought it was??

OBD2 has the rectangular 16 pin connector, your car is pre OBD2 hence the round connector.
