bit of a strange one.... I've had the car (1988 260E) for a couple of weeks now and noticed my wing mirrors are 2 different shapes
The drivers one is longer than it is tall, whilst the passenger one is taller than it is long......
Is this a special MB feature or just a previous cheapskate owner who replaced a broken one with the wrong part???

thanks,
James

I think it is a strange interpretation of some German regulation about mirrors having to provide a certain amount of viewing area. Mirrors are curved differently these days so you can get around the problem.

If I had an old-school benz with different sized mirrors, I'd be tempted to replace the shorter one with a LHD equivalent :)

the two mirrors are shaped that way for a reason - the drivers side is wider giving a better viewing angle for overtaking etc - you can see farther out into the traffic. The passenger side is taller and gives more of a vertical view when you are reversing - simple really and incredibly logical :)

Hi

Are they not shaped differently because one is electric and one is manual?

not from what we were told - purely to do with field of view

Later W124's have twin electric mirrors and can be retrp fitted into earlier W124's amd W201's

I like the mirrors just the way they are, it makes the car quircky and unique. :)
