I use a Sealey extractor pump, had it for 4 years now and very pleased with it.

try searching for the term "topsider" :)

I had no idea! What a dreadful idea - no way to drain the sludge out!
I'm sure I read somewhere on this forum that someone had modified the sump on a smart so that the oil could be drained in the traditional way.

If you've got anything that can't be sucked up by a Pela or similar device, you have *much* bigger problems to deal with than considering the pros and cons of different methods for oil changing.

Incidentally, it's usually how oil is changed in most modern MB and BMW dealerships - the cars are designed with the lowest parts of the sump near to the dipstick. After sucking the oil out, typically not a single drop comes out if you then remove the sump plug.

I would be interested if anyone could point out any hard evidence which shows that using a Pela or similar pump caused any engine damage.

I would be more inclined to think that oil changes delayed because of the hassle of getting underneath and wrestling with undertrays, spilling oil, oil being blown about by the wind, etc, etc cause more damage. (Although it's not such a big deal since catastrophic engine failure isn't exactly common anymore)

Using a Pela makes an oil change a quick and clean job, all done from above. With a pair of thin gloves on you can do an oil & filter change while still wearing good clothes.

Its not just the sludge to worry about,if you've ever taken the sump off a car you quite often find small metal particles in there, especially on front wheel drives, you dont want them going up to the pistons & valves !

Used a Pela Pump on my last 2 mecedes cars no problem 6 years old now and fine - buy one, its so easy

Pela are very good,we use one of these and a Sealey both are good, we find that with most modded sumps on Smarts we actually get more out with the pump than through the sump plug!

That's why we have an oil filter :D

Looks good and a nice price too!

The one comment on the site made it clear that it works better with warm oil....

Bit of a no-brainer but worth mentioning :)

Hello, thanks for that. I did notice the warm oil bit too, guess that`s common sense in my eyes as well !! I thought the price was good too, think i will get one when i return from my holiday, and see how it goes ! regards Damian. :)

Front wheel drive, as such, isn't such an issue. However, I would think twice about using a vacuum pump to do an oil change on a car with the gearbox in the sump, like Minis, 1100s, 1800s, Maxis, Princesses, that sort of car.

For more mainstream engines, normal engine wear particles are very small, and will either be caught in the filter, or will be able to be sucked out.
