hi all, started my clk430 up earlier but after a couple of minutes tickover, she cut out:(.I noticed the orange engine light was on in the right hand corner of the dash. She starts up ok but the orange light is still on.Two questions;is it safe to drive? and is it a trip to the indie for the star treatment? many thanks:dk:

managed to get home but now it wont start???? help!!

any other symptoms? Star at best, OBD at least to give you some clue.
If its the crank position sensor (common), letting it cool down thoroughly, it *should* restart. BUT, ou wouldn't want to go far as when it gets hot it'll breakdown again (i.e. electrically breakdown) and leave you stranded again at the first subsequent junction or roundabout.

It did start when a little cooler, just got it back to the storage unit.I will book it in at the indie, hope it gets there!

take a obd2 code reader to check where is the problem and fix it.

It does sound like it may well be the crank position sensor issue. As stated above it's prety common. We had this fail on our W203 recently, letting it cool down will allow you to restart however as soon as the car warms up it'll breakdown again (it effectively cuts the fuel supply when the fault occurs).

I wouldn't drive it too far, how close is your Indy?

Is it a good idea to drive a car with an undetermined fault causing the engine light to come on?

Unless the car is in limp mode then there should be little risk.

Sounds like the crank position or cam sensor to me, mine is doing the same thing atm. Starts fine when cold but takes a couple of goes to start it when hot. If I start it from cold for a week or so the lamp goes out but one false-start and it's back for a few days. My crank sensor went about a year ago, cam sensor about 6 months ago and now another one has gone. Should have done them all while it was under the knife!

If it is the crank or cam sensor(s) then I'd get them all replaced at the same time, they're not expensive and the labour won't be much more when combined into one job.

its going to the indie garage £45 plus vat to put it on the star.If it is the sensor any idea how much including the fitting thanks for all the replys.

£45 + VAT to plug it in and do two minutes work ?

I'm in the wrong game.

It's probably because he is charging a minimum one hour diag.

Just to plug in should be no more than £20plus vat IMO. To plug in and diagnose an issue (CLK engine mounts for example) could be more costly.

The garage is probably allowing for one hours check.

Thank again for replies anyone got any figures as a guide line for sensor and fitting I hear it's 15 mins work is this right?

Any follow up to this ?

My CPS I suspect is on the way out :(

Yes thought I'd put it on already. It was the crankshaft sensor £110 fitted for genuine part,£45 for the star, all plus the dreaded vat phew!!!
