The quote below is taken from the Guardian website on an article about the HMRC refusing to put up the mileage allowance from 45 ppm.

"I pay 35 pence a litre for 4 star and have paid that for over 3 years now and before that 30 p for about the previous 8 or 10 yars.
I dont pay any duty or vat because technically I dont buy the stuff. I make a contribution to the upkeep of the old service station a group of us own and we fill our cars up free.

Cant even begin to calculate how much we have saved over the years.

Plenty of old service stations about going cheap with tanks and an old pump.

And as the petrol isnt "sold" cost is fully offset"

Is this for real. Can anyone buy a Filling Station and NOT sell the petrol - just keep it for their own use?

It is utter b*ll*cks. Heating oil costs more than that and it does not have the duties on it that petrol and diesel have.

There might be a loophole that allows people to do this, but if the idea caught on, I bet the law would get changed pretty quickly

Perhaps the quote is from the seventies ?

Is there such a thing as four star and two star anymore ?

rubbish, tax is paid at source. I buy red derv which is about 65ppl and that is basically the product, and a very small amount of tax

retailer adds about 8 to 10 ppl for his overheads and profit
