Paint codes

The paint code on my 2001 C-class is 744. I got this from the inside door panel of the car.

I've always known Brilliant Silver as being 744

I think that the 9 does come up on some old dater bases but as Bobby says it is the only one known as brilliant silver

My W210 door handles have 9744 in the code

Could this be due to that MB have a min of 4 numbers on their part list, my 129 parts have the same 4 numbers

The prepended 9 looks like a filler number and I assumed that the 9 would be true for all paint codes but for the door handles among other things the number can be other things. I wondered if this was to do with the colour of the basecoat or whether the paint was metallic or not.

Who knows what it means?
