It's me laddo's birthday today and so birthday money needs spending! Josh is after a PC game. The game is Company of Heroes.

The only version of the game we can readily pick up is a DirectX10 version. Having a look at the DX site it talks about DX10 being for Vista. Is it reasonable to assume then that DirectX 10 will not work on a Win XP PC and therefore that the game won't work?

Paul is coming over tomorrow, ask him when he gets to my place.

I will If I don't have an answer before then - but Josh has had a bit of a tough day for him. He's OK but it would be brilliant if I could order this game for him tonight. Would make his birthday.

For those that might be thinking spoilt brat - Josh has an autism disorder - Asperger's Syndrome and dealing with his birthday has been a challenge for him being the first since me and his dad split;)

reading some more (I'll admit I kind of fell behind "cutting edge"), the answer is no and it's more than just Vista related, you'll need a DX10 graphics card as well to take advantage of the features.

Sadly it's time for a different game or a new computer

Sorry

Andy

I don't think there is a workaround unless you can get hold of the non-DX10 version....

Looks like that's what we'l have to do. You can get the non DX10 version - just not as easily - higher demand:rolleyes:

Don't panic pammy COH is in essence a DX9.0c game the DX10 packaging is for Vista owners and patches the installation to DX10. The installer will check which version of Windows you are using and install the DirectX drivers appropriate to it (although it won't work on a platform earlier than XP)

The main issue for gamers with DX10 is Microsoft have dropped legacy support for older systems. Previous versions of DX would use all the facilites available on the PC so if you have a machine which could manage DX8 and no better and installed DX9 it would still run but you'ld only get DX8 features. This is no longer the case. (Effectively Microsoft are saying, "tough, if you want to play the game you must buy hardware to match").

THQ/Relic who make CoH aren't playing the Microsoft game, if you've got Vista it will make the XP game run properly. If you've got XP it will install like it did before Vista was born.

Mind you if you've got Vista and a GeForce 8 series card it looks stunning in DX10!

:bannana: :bannana: happy birthday josh :bannana: :bannana:

ps sorry its late
