From the 5 minute on Google I have had time for, this appears to be quite a common problem.

Anybody come across this, if so ideas/fixes welcome!

As in it was already running Windows 10 and you have added a new DVD drive, or it was already there and isn't seen after an upgrade?

If you have just upgraded to Windows 10, then it have something to do with the SATA or AHCI settings in the computer's BIOS.

I would suggest the following:

Firstly check that the SATA cables are connected correctly (if Desktop PC), and that the optical drive is getting power.

Upgrade the firmware for you PC / laptop / motherboard, including the BIOS, to latest version.

Check the PC / laptop / motherboard manufacturer's website for information regarding SATA and AHCI configuration for Windows 10. Then check the optical drive manufacturer's website for same.

Check the PC / laptop / motherboard manufacturer's website for any Windows 10 specific drivers. Then check the optical drive manufacturer's website for same.

I would try a data disc in the drive and see if that works.

If it is just playing DVD films etc. that is the issue - as per KennyN's post - just install VLC.

MS deleted the ability to play DVD films etc. natively in Windows 10.
