just noticed on the roof where the plastic rain gutters are that a couple of small spots of laquer has come off the paint. Paint itself is fine.

Will it be ok to just touch it up or does it need more of a fix?

You could probably just fix that (for protection) using some lacquer or clear nail varnish (ask your girlfriend/wife/mum/sister or all 4 if neccessary ;) ).

If you buy a 'touch-up kit' from your stealership, they will give you two bottles of touch-up paint if your car is lacquered. One will be the correct MB paint for the base coat, and the other will be a clear lacquer. Just give them your paint code, or chassis/VIN number if you are not sure.

HTH,

Cheers,

Will

P.S, not wanting to alarm you, but peeling lacquer near a roof gutter could indicate that this area of the body has been re-finished. Just FYI?!?

Hi Will,
I was just going to say the same thing.

Hi Mick1
Do you know the full history of the car? and has it has any body repairs?

Regards,
John

only repairs I am aware of on the car was a respray on the bonnet for some stone chips. That was the only thing that came up when I had the car inspected.

I'll get a touch up kit from the dealers and touch it up, see how that goes.

You can have the paint inspected if you were really bothered, but there is little point at this stage. If it really bothered you then it would be better not to know I suppose!

There is specialist equipment available for this task - it can measure the paint thickness to determine if it has been re-finished.

Good Luck,

Will

TBH it's hardly noticeable, the spots are only about a couple millimetres wide. I just don't want it getting any worse.

Wonder if mechanincal car washes can do this kind of damage as previous owners have use these (there are tell tale swirl marks on the boot lid)

MB use them all the time to check validity of warranty claims, aka wriggle out of paying for warranty repairs. :p It's only a 30 second job to check the affected area for paint thickness. If you're on friendly terms with your local MB body shop they may perform this check for you free of charge because it really is so quick. However, as posted above, you may not want to know the answer.

I've found to my cost that pressure washers don't do lacquered finishes much good. You only need a stone chip for the pressure of the water to lift the lacquer.
