Peeling Lacquer

Update. Have spoken to Marshall Mercedes Chichester, I was told they only have one person who inspects paint issues, he is based in Southampton, so I am expecting to hear when he will be in the area, however if it’s going to take an age I may just pop over to Southampton. In the meantime I have sent photographs. When there is an outcome I will post.

Update. The journey. Incidentally when you ring Marshall Mercedes Chichester you actually speak to a centre in Preston, called Customer Retention ( emails confirm this) on the 19 Jan (as previously posted) problem reported with photos etc, was told and confirmed by email that my email would be forwarded and somebody would get in touch. Friday 27 January nothing heard so emailed and asked when should I expect to hear from somebody, the person from Cutomer Relations apologised and said sorry for no contact and would immediately chase. See what happens next week.

Update. My local MB Dealership contacted me, an after sales Manager, who said the car is out of its 3 year warranty and nothing they could do, I pushed back and it was indicated there was a problem with another red colour and I have read about it on the forum, I said it’s not satisfactory wished to escalate my issue, they sent me the MB Customer Care, based in the Netherlands, very helpful, took details, given reference and email and they will be going directly to the dealership as an inspection should have been offered and I will hear from MBCC and the MD. If I heard MBCC right MB are aware of a Jupiter Red problem but have not yet officially recognised it. MBCC did mention a goodwill process. Positive call. Post when I know more. UK number for customer care is 02076609993 should anybody need it. Email [email protected]

Update. MBUK have contacted MD and my car is going in for a paint assessment on Friday 17 February. A report will then be submitted to MBUK.

Positive news.

Keep us updated as will be good knowledge for anybody else with any issues

Thanks for the updates, Wish I checked for common faults before I bought my 2013 S204 currently got 2 20mm size areas that is starting to peel which ill have to get sorted ASAP, hopefully you get a good result from MB.

Update. As previously posted I had the paint inspection on the 17th February and was told it would be around a couple of weeks for a decision, well it was just over 3 weeks and a couple of prompts. Today I had a call from Marshall Mercedes Chichester with good news, MB will repaint the rear spoiler and drivers door handle. The decision has been confirmed to me by email and gives the authority to proceed with the repairs at Marshall Paint and Body Repair Centre Newbury, the authority and repair codes are emailed directly to the Centre, all I have to do is arrange direct with the Centre for the car to be booked in. I was told this Center is now the nearest approved MB repairer to me, some 50 miles away. In due course I will post on how the repair went from booking in to collection. Overall, pleased and a very good outcome.

You're a lucky boy, as previously posted I got nowhere with my S204 purchased used approved from original supplier MB Ashford and taken back to them when the lacquer peel started on bonnet and roof! That was when the car was 11 years old, 7 years after I bought it from them and 6 years since they'd last seen it - although it had been serviced by reputable (at that time anyway!) MB specialists. I now also have peeling on the rear spoiler but know for sure I'll have to pay for the repair - and the black trims either side of the windscreen and both sides of the roof are also looking sad! Should be easy enough and not too pricey to replace the windscreen trims, but the roof trims (removing the roof rails) are another matter!! Anyway, hope you have a good and hassle free outcome!

Update 5th June. Dropped car off at Marshall Body Repair Newbury today to have the lacquer peel on the rear spoiler and drivers door handle dealt with, I was wrong to assume it would be with them for about 5 working days. Booked the car in and said how long they said about 3 weeks!!!!!!!. After much discussion it then becomes apparent I had not been informed of the total paint problem, not only repaint the spoiler and door handle that I was fully aware of, in addition the bonnet, roof, both right hand doors and the rear left quarter panel to to be taken to bare metal and repainted, I was told due to blistering, not something I can see at all (and I have been checking the paintwork like a hawk just in case any other lacquer peel surfaced) but I am not disputing their diagnosis. I spoke to the local dealership who arranged the paint inspection with my concern and the lack of communication with me, and now I require a loan car. See what happens, will update when I have more to say. The positive in all of this is Mercedes have acknowledged a problem with Jupiter Red and they are paying 100%.

That's great to hear that MB are going to honour it and clearly repair more than your eye can see.

To be honest I wouldn't be delaying it. Loan cars are cheap to hire. Get one and get your car repaired. £500 (at an assumption) for a small loan car for a few weeks with the knowledge your car will be repaired is a small cost to outlay. You could have been looking at a much larger bill once the paint failed on the other areas.

Marshall Mercedes Chichester provided me with an AClass showing 800 miles the next day, no charge, they have been most helpful.

It's still a bit of a strange decision by MB. I would have pressed for a full respray. Leaving some panels not repaired is half measures. What's going to happen when these panels start blistering which is inevitable I would have thought. Those owners of Fire Opal cars got full repaints except for the plastics. Now that MB have in effect admitted faulty manufacture I'd press for more. It's not being greedy, just practical.

Glad to hear some main dealers know what good service is
