Petrol Price

One of the good things about being very tall (VTD) is that there will be a fair bit of you left if we all decide to downsize, you should be able to get a job in a shop passing things down to us.

No - it just means that having paid more in real terms for your fuel it may last a bit longer depending on what car you drive now as compared to the past.

It takes me far less to get drunk than it did when I was 21 but alcohol hasn't got any cheaper in the pub !

Just means you are using alcohol far more efficiently.:D Just like cars now use fuel more efficiently.:thumb:

The problem is that we don't produce enough to dictate the market price.

I would say it is more that we don't USE enough to dictate the market price .

If a minority stop buying , or cut back , because of cost - it will make no difference .

Suppliers will only take notice once a significant number of consumers stop buying such that revenue goes down .

Planet Earth needs to either limit (& ideally reduce) it's population......

The Chinese tried that already .

The Chinese and Indians will quite happliy buy what we don't.

There lies the problem...

I never thought of it quite like that !

It's either that or .........

1/ You don't practice enough :D

or

2/ You're getting old and just can't handle it anymore

I'm going for the first one myself and I like being "fuel" efficient!:D

I have fuel prices issues but I always knew buying a C63 meant not really having a right to complain about them. So I don't.

On the other hand I do feel a lot of sympathy for those in (say) rural areas where their car is their lifeline and who have seen fuel prices rise at the rate they have recently. This combined with low incomes in some of these areas must make it really tough.

The answer? No idea. But I recently watched a film on YouTube which highlights some very poignant facts about the planet we live on. It is one of the most beautifully filmed documentaries I have seen...

YouTube - homeproject's Channel

So - back to the C63. Av fuel consumption since I've had it (almost a year now) is 19mpg. Do I love driving it? Yes. When it's time to change it, will I consider something more economical? Probably not.

Definitely 2/ I'm afraid !

When has petrol ever gone down in price?!

It went down to just under £1 per litre in 2010 at times having been much higher before that. Diesel was as high as 132.9 per litre well over a year ago and came down to 99.9 pence in 2010.

Sadly the pound is now 25% lower than it was when the world price of oil last peaked so we pay more for oil which is priced in dollars -even without the world price rising.

Fuel prices ???

New super MPG/Petrol/Diesel/Elec etc etc cars will lead to less litres being used by road users in the future I guess.

Price of fuel keeps going up, some drivers will reduce consumption by reduced use and better driving styles etc etc.

So if overall litres usage takes a tumble, plus savings on VED and reduction in Congestion Charging (London for example)

UK PLC will need to keep fuel tax high.

My thinking is people who can't afford new super MPG cars or people who happen to own/drive not so super MPG cars will be paying an unfair part of the Uk fuel tax bill ???

Let me take a guess at future prices.

£7.00-----2011

£7.50-----2012

£8.00-----2013

£8.50-----2014

£9.00-----2015

The above is only a wild guess, 2015 is only 4 years away.

I'm at present looking to buy a CLS 320/350cdi and am using £8.50 for working out my fuel costs over 5/6 years. maybe a little boaring for some, but I like to know running costs as far as is possible.

Think of it this way fuel is still cheaper then a litre of beer or water.

At the end of the day I don't live completely rural but where I live you really do rely on your car. Public transport is not a viable option as it does not work at 5am in the morning when I go to work plus I don't want to spend my journies with the old and the poor. It is also very expensive for what you get.

I have always been of the opinion it costs what it does to fill up luckily I have the choice to use a 50+ mpg diesel car or a 19mpg V6. Thankfully fuel prices are probably one of the cheapest in the country here as we are right on a port so there are no extra travelling costs incurred which also bumps the price of fuel up.

As people have mentioned before Fuel is linked to everything we as human beings rely so much on the stuff it is hard to comprehend for the average simpleton especially if you are a green freak and think that we can stop using the internal combustion engine overnight. The price of Oil dictates pretty much the price of everything else, food, heating and any other consumable that is transported on something that runs on oil. They don't call it black gold for nothing.......

Until we stop our utter reliance on oil and switch to something more abundant like hydrogen (realistically this is the only way forward but rediculously expensive at the moment) we will be paying through the nose for everything.

As for electric cars, what an absolute waste of time and resources and all these manufacturers should be investing their R&D money into making hydrogen fuel cell cars cheaper not toy cars which are absolutely useless in the real world

This must mean the Yanks. However although they are moaning about gas prices, they are right now paying only $3 per US gallon.
That is £2 ish at present exchange rates which does not hurt them at all.

The man in the street does not really feel the impact of filling up his Car/pickup/4x4 the way we do in the UK. Until the Americans really start to hurt with fuel prices then my personal opinion is that nothing will change for the better.....

5% of the worlds population that uses 25% of the worlds energy

Are you Jeremy Clarkson? Your post certainly reminds me of his 'style'..

I agree about 'green freaks' though, electric is not an answer and the government need to reduce (drastically) the tax on fuel.

Couldn't possibly be him. His sentences didn't start "some say...". :)
