I wonder if anyone of you experienced this. My CD ROM drive keeps opening and closing of it's own volition - any clues please?

This has only been happening for the past couple of weeks - it hasn't got worse but it's starting to scare the cats!

I've just started a Malwarebytes scan...just in case anyone was to suggest that.

The poltergeist virus perchance?;) Could be a hardware fault- check its not software by pulling signal line off ( computer off) if it continues its hardware if not its probably some malicious registry entries- have you got any peer to peer software running?

I rememebr a sneaky trick with VBA Script to open/close the CDdrive from word/excel - doesn't happen when you are editing somehting someone has sent you recently does it?

I had this happen on a Gateway PC years ago and was completely baffled, being convinced it was being "ordered" to open by some software issue.
In the end I called Gateway support (for the one and only time in owning 3 of their machines) and they said straight off it was faulty and sent me another one, which worked fine.

@Stevesey
I was watching TV on the sofa, my PC was idle, I wasn't doing anything on my PC and I hadn't intentionally started any programs.

Weird thing is it happens at random times.. e.g. it hasn't done it since I posted...Malwarebytes scan is still running btw..

Malwarebytes didn't find anything and it's stopped doing it for now.. will keep an eye on it and if it comes up again I'll try some of your suggestions.
I didn't say before but there wasn't even a CD/DVD in there..maybe it's just a sensor problem.
Will update as necessary, thanks to all.

3 days on - no more re-occurrences...
