hi please could anyone help me my w202 c180 r reg wont start intermitently :doh:when you put the key in the steering lock comes off all dash lights work as normal,it even turns over fine batterys ok, but wont start then if i leave it for a while or till morning it will start on the button first time, the fuel pump is priming and working as i can hear it buzzing, this is my 1st mb only had it 3 weeks and thinking of selling as i bought it tobe a reliable daily driver, i will keep it and modify it if i can sort the problem???????? thanks for advice in advance.:thumb:

Would get a diagnostic reading if I was you for starters, sounds like a dodgy intermitent crank sensor? could be temperature increase during engine running causing the signal to weaken. This is if you are sure you have fuel getting through?

Crank Sensor - I had the same problem - could leave it for 5mins but not half an hour if I did had to wait an hour and a half

hi mate i spoke to a auto electrician yesterday who told me theres no point plugging it in as the engine management light isnt on. (i thought the ecu would of stored the fault but the bloke told me it will only tell him if the e/m light is on?)
i can hear the fuel pump and after a while of turning the engine over i can smell fuel a tiny bit.
so could a c/position sensor be fautly intermitten?.

hi mate, so was yours the same one minute it would start perfect then hour later it wouldnt start, but say you go shop,or petrol etc it always starts within 5-10 minutes.
its just this is my first mb so not really worked on them before, and want to keep it to modify etc but this problem put me off. thanks

take it to an indy - highly recommended spanner twirlers both north and south are on here - mine cost circa £150 to sort including the diagnostics. No problem ever since

hi mate how much are the crank sensors by there self as i could fit myself, many thanks.

not sure £60ish I think - was 3years ago I had mine done

I would have to disagree with the auto electrician, but that it just from my experience. I use a EU702 diagnostic reader on my ML and only the other week I reset my fault codes as it recorded glow plug coils 1-3-4 as faulty due to me disconnecting them and also a fuel pressure sensor fault. These were all recorded without the engine light being displayed. But I guess it may vary from vehicle to vehicle.

Crank sensor signals will vary slightly with temperature and if yours is failing the temperature may just make the signal output to weak for the ECU to read.
May not be that but from your symptoms if it was mine I would be checking it.

hi i see you live in northants i live in kettering how much would you charge to put it on your diagnostics, thanks.
also i have a proton coupe evolution and the airflow meter was playing up and that never had a managment light on and i got that plugged in to a scanner and that read a fault code. maybe the auto electrician was chating poo as at first he was trying to tell me the battery was knackered, then he said it might be the key/immobiliser. so iam a bit confused.thanks

I think your car(merc) from memory has the large round 38pin diagnostic connector under the bonnet on the right?. The diagnostic kit I have is for OBD and OBDII only, there is a adaptor lead you can buy for around £10-15 that should take your connector to an OBD port. Ebay usually sells these things..
Let me know if you can get an adaptor and I will read your codes next time your near.
usually best to clear all fault codes stored and then give the car a good run

if we can sort it you can buy me a drink!

Hello, does sound like a Crank Position Sensor to me, bought mine from MB about £80, you can also get them from Bosch Outlets as well I believe, regards Damian. :)

Stwat's link is what your looking for. If you check your connection under the bonnet to make sure its the large round one. Just checked ebay and there are lots available, just depends whether you want to wait from one from China to save a few quid.

Let me know if you get one, your quite welcome to use the diagnostic kit I have, It has been very useful for my car..

thank to everyone for there help its much appriciated and if i can help anyone with anything just ask, i get paid monthly so next week will get a new sensor and the leads for diagnostic, thanks
