The thing is, your sort code and A/c number are on every cheque and if you send it in the post with your address, you have done the same as JC.

The problem is with the banks allowing a DD to be set up without proper security checks. Online purchasing by credit card is nothing to do with this story.

If you order by phone then you give them all the details which they could just jot down - at least in a computer there's some element of traceability there, not that anyone seems to bother with these things.

I've had 2 credit cards mis-used this year - the last one was used by the perps for an on-line purchase which the bank's system authorised, yet the seller has no record on a transaction against my address (so it should never have authorised). Not that I care - I get a credit. The seller wasn't happy though, as they'll get a charge back.

In JC's case though, the Direct Debit guarantee should ensure he gets repaid, although the bank may say he shouldn't have published the information in such a way. Noting that Richard Hammond has just bought a £6M house though, I assume £500 is absolute chicken-feed to JC - I'm surprised he even noticed it.
