I am having sudden difficulties receiving mail by using Outlook Express.

When trying to access mail I get an error message that says that "POP3 server not responding".

It has been working normally until 30th Dec 2005, has any of the settings changed? The POP3 is set to "pop.freeserve.net", is this still correct.

Any assistance would be welcome please.

Brian,

Can you logon to the web and view your mail that way? That might give a pointer if it's a login name/password problem.

Or you might have an email from them in your in-box.

Not a freeserv user so can't help much - but I'd be suprised anything changed for no reason.

Unless the password is automatically changed annually or something like that?

Been onto the Wanadoo web-site and logged on OK, received outstanding e-mails that way. So mail login and password still working.

Have sent Wanadoo the same question, too early for a reply yet.

Might want to try pop.wanadoo.co.uk or something which is what I use, though I guess you have a Freeserve address so only pop.freeserve would work. Does their webmail work? Then again Wanadoo could be having issues with that particular set of addresses.

Sorry I can't b any further help. Only just out of bed :D.

Personally I'd use Outlook as I had OE suddenly die on me in 2000 and I'v not used it since.

2 things to try ...

Normally its either outlook express or your AV that screws up..

Delete the account from outlook express and re enter all the details again , if you had antivirus such as norton , remember to go back into the norton control pannel and turn on protection for that account.

Ive just tried to telnet to pop.freeserve.net and it appears to still give a logon prompt.

let me know how you get on :)

Seem to have Solved it. :bannana:

Was having another problem - which was the computer was not shutting down properly, hanging at shut down instruction. Having to instruct it three times before it would shut down, then hang again and having to shut down manually.

Anyway suspected I had downloaded a virus or some other duff programme. I went to System Restore to see what that would bring. Only download was on the 28/12/05 which was Software Distribution Service 2.0?

So went back to 25/12/05 restore point and reset system to that. Outlook now works fine, yet to try shutdown, but less of a problem.

So there you are then, totally confused but it worked. :bannana: :bannana:

I'm even more confused now, as it has started doing the same again.

HELP anyone?????????

I'm not sure a system restore will correct it sufficiently if it's a virus of some kind. If it's doing it again it seems like there's something roguish in your PC. I'd run a full system sweep for virus and spyware etc.

Have you checked the Freeserve support site to make sure they've not announced any known problems. I have had this in the past and it's been ISP based ;)

Can you ping the server ?

If this works, try the check box for using authentication (my outbound server requires authentication from the mail setup box)

Let me know if this doesn't work.

Ping the server?????????? You have lost me there.

Authentication? Maybe try that but again it is working at the moment.

Perhaps it was ISP after all?

Ping the server. Goto the start menu, select start and type 'cmd'

In the comand prompt window type ping pop.freeserve.net and the computer will attempt to find your mail server and acknowledge its existence.

As its now working again I'd leave it. Oh Well.
