Possible Gearbox or sensor issue

Mine has only done 18,000, B service due soon so will have them look at then, thanks anyway Malcolm, will post result after MB have had a look.

Russ

Ask them to re adapt the gearbox ECU this info is too new for me,, I have heard of it and people say much better after

Thanks for looking malcolm.

Will see what my indie says about the gearbox oil.

Having said that, I've lost all faith in the ability of my MB main dealer and local indie at the moment, due to:

(a) my indie not knowing you could do cluster programming -tried & failed
(b) MB stealer telling me i needed minimum 3 hrs of diagnostics and possible rear screen and screen amplifier for my phone problem which i fixed for free in seconds with MBClub help.

Will post back and let you know how i get on.

Update

Yeah - my indie said that MB sealed the gearbox for life but now the concensus of opinion was to change the gearbox oil at 80k.

As a sheer precautionary measure, i decided to have the oil changed when i had my B service the other day. However, on mine there is only one drain plug and no plug on the main bit - the torque convertor. So they flushed fresh oil through the whole thing - wasted a few litres of oil but at least the TC got some fresh oil.

Result has been that there is no appreciable difference.

It has been shown here that by just starting the engine for a few secs pumps out the old oil, sure if you use new fluid to do this then you will waist about 3½ liters of fluid.

In the USA they disconnect the fluid cooler and use a pump to push the old fluid out of the converter

And the mileage is 40k not 80

I'll report back after they have looked at mine.

Just another thought before mine goes in next week, Mike on the other forum has the same symptoms and MB have indicated possible causes as,

a) Accelerator Pedal Potentiometer
or
b) Relay associated with a) above...

I'll get back as soon as,

Could this be the problem with my 203 coupe?

The only difference with the symptoms is that the car moves a little before the jolt happens. Also, if i feather the throttle it doesn't happen at all.

OK, car had B service done yesterday. I asked them to look at the gearbox and described the symptoms as per The Dent Guys thread.

The service consisted only of the usual oil & oil/air filters, brake fluid change and the gearbox was repaired under warranty, oil leak into electrics, which I believe is a common issue, although I thought a 2005 model would have had an updated seal?

Unfortunately, when I collected the car, I never got the chance to test the gearbox as the car lost power and poured smoke from the exhaust 300 yards from the garage. It was swiftly reurned to the workshop for investigation, at first they though it was being overfuelled, but I got a call this morning saying the head gasket may be the problem and they are going to strip it down & confirm.

Meantime I will have to wait on Mercedes finding the problem & fixing before I can report if the warranty repair on the gearbox has cured the problem or not. This was the last thing I expected when taking my car for a service!
