Whilst I acknowledge your point that potholes are inanimate, and that surprisingly few drivers seem willing/prepared to avoid them, as
@st13phil pointed out they are even more of a challenge when using two wheeled transport.
When I am in my cage (or my van for that matter), I am still "hyper road surface aware". I constantly reposition & moderate my progress to avoid potholes, manhole covers etc as a legacy from well over 50y of riding motorcycles on the roads.
Nonetheless there are instances that can catch out even the most world wary imho. I subconsciously map all the roads as I use them, so generally avoid almost all such obstacles.
However...
My nemesis is riding my motorcycles on unknown roads, and finding a pothole on my chosen line. When you are cranked over mid corner there are few options available. You can tighten your line, or widen it, if there is adequate carriageway available to divert into . However if that takes you into the opposing lane it will have to be free not only at that moment but for the length of time it will take for you to return to the safety of your side of the road. Conversely if diverting takes your line closer to the nearside, not only must you be certain you will completely avoid it (because otherwise the loss of traction will inevitably take the wheels from under you), but also your more acute lean will put your upper torso in to danger from verge side items or opposing traffic.
If you think braking mid-corner to avoid a pothole would be a realistic option on a motorcycle, you must be a far more proficient rider than I could aspire to.
Generally though I must agree with your stance, the majority of drivers seem happy to drive straight regardless, and just leave the poor old car to cope with whatever lays in their path.
