Prison for 77 year old "taking son's points"

Perverting the course of justice should ALWAYS be treated as a very serious offence, plus the son's driving record suggests that he is not the World's most law abiding citizen.

I think it totally wrong for anyone to suggest that just because criminals are getting released early, we should then turn a blind eye to those that want to deliberately lie on oath. If this elderly gentleman is ill, then why did the son allow him to lie? Why did the son then OPENLY brag about what he had done? No votes and serves them right, they got EXACTLY what they deserved. :)

Any guilty person, pleading not guilty, is lying to the court lol

Sorry I'm with P o D. He blatantly lied to the authorities, he got caught, he got done for perverting the course of justice. A 3 month sentence probably means out in a week or two anyway.

Things like this annoy me. There is an element of respect present in most aspects of life and if you were caught at the time speeding, you hold your hand up and admit to it.

However there is something sneaky, surreptitious and underhand with speed cameras that removes the respect aspect and makes evasion seem acceptable.

As an example, look at the content on the post here regarding torched cameras on the A2 - nowhere else will you see people being disrespectful about what effectively is arson.

The man did lie in court. But a punishment should reflect the severity of the crime. So although he lied - he lied over a trivial issue - that is enforced in a disrespectful way.

He is not a risk to society, and his actions to an extent were mitigated by being protective towrds his own family in a trivial matter.

So how can it be justified in banging up someone who is old and no risk to society for something trivial that probably many people would do for their children - while letting out a vast selection who offer a far greater threat to society at the same time?

Judges have the option of offering community service - this offence was crying out for that sentence. But so many of the judiciary have their heads so far up their @rses that they can see daylight and have no idea how normal people live. (Based on the sentence last week of 18 months for a guy who raped a ten year old)

His son may have a bad driving record - but he will be sentenced for that now too - but the old mans crime was in misrepresenting himself to the court as the driver - so his son's record is irrelevant.

Another one hacking me off is imprisoning old people for not paying their council tax.

Lets keep it in perspective folks. He's an old man trying to help his family. The prison place should go to someone a little more deserving.

i think it should have been the boy going to jail not the old man trying to help his grandson...

Is that only if they get in the witness box and lie under oath? We have already discussed this and it appears to be acceptable practice that very rarely if ever gets punished. I wonder if they filled in forms as opposed to going to the courts? If the answer is YES, then there is a moral to be learnt.

If the answer was yes, then it appears acceptable to lie under oath in a court of law, but beware if you lie on a certified document?

Well he lied to keep his son on the road, when he should have been banned. That doesn't seem particularly trivial to me, and quite possibly did represent a risk to society. We don't know what the son's existing points were for, not necessarily speeding ... could have been defective tyres or anything else.

This was a murder trial and he did not go to prison for lying.

Probably because that was contempt of court, rather than perverting the course of justice. Different offences.

contempt of court = prison.....unless of course you are Lord Browne, late of BP.

I recall he made a few statements to the Judge that were later proved to be lies.

Ho hum

i think he went to jail because he dared to deceive the authorities that be.
we all know that crime against fellow citizens is treated differently from crimes across the state.
So if you murder/rape/ assault old men or fellow children you are likely to get off early,
But if you dare challenge the state or the authorities ,e.g do not pay your fine, your road tax, speeding tickets, council tax e.t.c or make the courts and in effect the state judiciary look stupid, they come at you like a ton of bricks to serve as a warning to others.

if that was really the case , i wonder how many policemen would have been sent down for the same crime? ;)
I think that whenever a police officer gets caught telling lies under oath there are usually huge ramifications, but as far as I am aware what we are discussing is someone simply filling in forms with deliberate whoopsies? There was NO lies actually spoke in a court of law, or have I misunderstood the original post?

Funny you should say that .A police man has just lost his job while his two mates in liverpool have been reprimanded for lying and planting/fabricating evidence to get a man jailed.
A copper was having a night out in town off duty, when his girlfriend had a problem with some guy.
The copper in plain clothes quickly called for back up and his mates in full gear arrived in no time.
Un believably after handcuffing the fella and throwing in to the back of the van, they let the plain clothes copper ride with him in the back, someone who already has a problem with the fella.
Needless to say by the time they got to the station,

He was sent to prison for lying to the court. You don't do that.

Did he lie to the court or did he lie to the chief constable on some forms?
