Problem with Indie garage

Guessing game.

No it was a merc indie and yes it was one recomended locally from this site from previous topics on local indies to me.
---------Any advice or anyone had similar problems with garage

Are you going to tell us which garage is involved at this time, or do you want us to guess?;)

I think at this stage it would be unfair until they have a chance to explain otherwise id be as bad as them and as i said im no expert and like most of us we only want the job done properly and everyone has got to earn living.I will update, though i want to be right and not give half the story.

Yes you really need to take this up with the garage.. Why would they damage the sump plug and then not change the oil..

Like DM says you may have a problem with the gearbox or maybe the oil cooler...

Best not to jump to conclusions in this scenario.

If it was me I think I would take it on the chin and go to somewhere with a good rep to have it rectified, sounds like at the worst its a new drain plug, some atf and a filter. just my opinion ofcourse ;)...... sometimes it just aint worth the grief and getting wound up over

The problem is going to be if the box is wrecked, then there will be problems determining the cause and whether the works performed had any bearing on that.

is the box still ok at the mo?, i thought we were talking about them not changing the oil and filter when they were paid to???, sorry if ive missed something

If the indie put 7litres of new ATF in and you then got some black stuff out, I'm afraid it's going to take more than a service to fix.
For the fresh ATF to go black it means clutches are burnt, which means a valve/solenoid/orifice is screwed - those clutch plates, maybe the steels too, need replacing and the orifice/solenoid/
valve fixing.

Since putting about 2 ltr of merc spec atf it drives fine holding all the gears and changes much smoother, before it took about five minutes of driving before it would change up,seemed to hold a lower gear for too long then drove fine.As i said the mech said theirs no way within 6 weeks and just over 100miles since allegedly 9ltrs of new atf fluid was put in should the oil be like this. The bill shows gasket/seal/filter 9lts of fluid supplied and written on the bill is the bit about returning it after about 200 miles for a re change because the oil was 'dirty'.However taken all the advice on board incl the 'take on the chin and dont go back'.Anyway thanks to all for the replies.

they are designed to hold the low gear at first start to allow the cat to heat up to working temp more quickly.

Cats only work when very hot.

You definitely need to talk to the garage concerned as that box doesn't hold 9L of fluid, especially since they said they couldn't drain the 'verter.

Maybe the fluid was so bad before that they did two changes of what they could.

Speak to them, tell them the fluid was low and causing problems and see if they will do another change either for no cost or for the cost of fluid only.

Ok heres the update went to garage voiced my concerns and showed the oil to the manager he then got the owner to contact me and i brought the car in for him to see.The owner put it up checked the oil turned the crank and drained the torque converter and yes it hadnt been emptied he wasnt amused !!genuinely.
Anyway fair due he apologised and asked me to stay why two mechanics drained entire box refitted new sundries re torque set sump and refilled with new mb oil he showed me exactly what the other repairs had been done originally and checked them personally,im now happy.
Thanks to all who replied a happy outcome

So either a genuine mistake or more likely a rogue mechanic.

sounds like an honest mistake... owners cant always keep an eye on everything their staff do.

I once took my car to George Fraser (back in the days when i was a banker living in london)..

The guy cross threaded the diff nut... 80 miles later my diff was completely shot..
Unfortunately GF tried to palm me off by saying that it was an old car and it was on its way out...
He lost my custom since then. Silly thing was he had a W123 for breaking in his yard, he could easily have rectified the mistake... instead it cost me for a 2nd hand diff and a weekend fitting it myself.

This garage have owned up to the mistake there is a lot to be said for that.

Makes me wonder why 9L of fluid was booked out...on the side job.?
Yeah even if you do a full strip down and re-build i think you would be struggling to get 9L of oil back into the gearbox, there is defiently something up here.

I would be straight back down there and demand that he does the job again and watch him while he does it (for free obviously) and if he is a reputable garage he would honour that to keep your custom
