Problems getting phone to connect in 'comfort' mode

I own a W204 C180. It has phone prep so all I had to do was purchase a holder for the armrest. Holder is all fitted but phone will not connect through 'comfort' mode.

The phone does connect perfectly through the normal bluetooth mode as I paired the phone when I purchased the car. Does the phone require any sort of pairing now that a holder has been fitted in the armrest?

I have read the manual but I am sure that I may have missed something.

Have you read the manual of the phone cradle? I've never seen a manual of a 204 phone cradle but since it connects over BT, don't you have to pair the phone even if you have the cradle?

Well the thing is that the phone is already paired. The cradle is fitted so I put the phone in there but to select 'comfort' mode on the audio screen it is 'greyed out' (not active). If I select comfort mode it shows 'Telephone Off' on the audio screen. How to pair the phone is featured in the Audio 20 handbook and fitting/removal of cradle is in the C Class owners manual. Im stumped!

Remove the cradle and phone. Disable bluetooth on your mobile. Delete the paired phone from the Audio 20 headunit. Then plug in the cradle and the phone and into the cradle see if it works and if the comfort mode option becomes available on the Audio 20.

What is the phone you are using ?

I have a Blackberry Curve 8900.

I have just deleted my phone from the MB Bluetooth and started from scratch. Paired phone up again with cradle attached but its still the same. Runs through normal bluetooth ok but nothing through the cradle. The cradle is working though as it flashes blue and is charging the phone. However, if phone is inserted inside it just displays 'Telephone Off' on the audio screen

You need to pair the cradle with the blackberry. There is a button on it somewhere (probably along top edge), hold down until it flashes blue faster - then search for the cradle on the phone, pairing code is 62872

Thats sorted it. Thanks very much Richard.

How is audio actually routed with the new Comfort Telephony option? Does the phone have to be paired with the cradle only or both with the cradle and the head unit?

What I'm after is that there would be an additional delay for the audio path if the phone audio is routed via the cradle to the head unit. In this case I would assume the head unit should be paired with the cradle too but I did not see this from the instructions.

There are a number of comfort telephony / UHI cradles that use bluetooth for the connection between the cradle and the phone - in fact most new cradles seem to be like that - I guess it saves reverse engineering the physical connection to the phone.

In the case of NTG2.5/NTG4/NTG3.5 the comfort phone connector is in fact a bluetooth device itself, and that is paired with the COMAND system over bluetooth. In fact most still have a sticker on them with the bluetooth mac address on them.

So, there is at least 1 bluetooth connection (COMAND->comfort-phone-connector) and dependant on phone cradle there is probably another one too.

This Comand to comfort phone connection was not clear to me. Now that this got clarified I'd like to know if the cradle needs to be paired with the head unit before it works or is this connection somehow automatically established? If it wasn't automatic, the car owner would need to pair the phone with the cradle and the cradle with the head unit (but I don't think the latter was mentioned earlier, how would it work if not paired?).

The contact plate gets paired with the COMAND when it is installed or replaced (i.e. at factory or at dealer). The interface (hardware/protocols) between the contact plate and the cradle is same as the older type UHI system - so the cradle doesn't know any difference between a UHI system versus a 'comfort phone contact plate'.

The comfort phone contact plate just has 3 wires, +12, Ground, and a power on signal to tell it the COMAND is on. (plus of course the coax lead to the antenna) - if you look at one you will see it is significantly larger that the older UHI contact plate.

On NTG2.5, in engineering mode you can see the pairing (and reset/change it) under the comfort phone settings.

This explains it all, I thought it was the cradle that needs to be paired but since it is the contact plate, then it gets all different. I was looking at the description of the power on signal if it was some kind of a LIN-bus with intelligence but no need for that if the contact plate has this BT capability. Perhaps the retrofit guide for Comfort phone would have explained something about this.

:-) The power on signal for the comfort phone from COMAND NTG2.5 is what is used to power the antenna amplifiers when you retrofit NTG2.5 in an older car. I.e. +12v when COMAND is turned on.

Hi,

I was reading along and this may be the right place to post my questions:

I have a 2004 SLK R171, it is factory fitted with Comfort Telephone.

The thing is, recently I retrofitted a Comand NTG 2.5 and the iPod Kit, so now the Comfort Telephone does not work.

How can I make it work? Do I have to connect the optical fiber connectors to the command? (They are now on the original plug fited to the NTG 2.5 adapter, and not connected to the Comand unit).

Do I need to go to the engineering menu on Comand and program anything?

Are there any parts needed?

Thanks in advance!!!

You cant. The NTG1/NTG2 (you had NTG1) phone, CD changer, TV tuner, lingatronic and Harmon Kardon are not compatible.

NTG2.5 comfort phone uses a different phone connector plate and wiring loom, and in fact it bluetooths to the NTG2.5 unit ..

Does your SLK have 2 compartments in the armrest or one ? If it has 1 it may be possible to replace the system with NTG2.5 comfort phone.

I presume you want the convenience of a cradle so the bluetooth phone in the head unit isn't good enough for you ?

The old phone control unit would not work with NTG2.5 Comand. Have you tried the Bluetooth HF profile option from the Comand itself? Do you really need the comfort telephony option (cradle and external antenna or BT SAP)?

Hi!

I really miss the cradle and not having to worry about battery if BT is on...

The cradle still powers the old phone, but it is not integrated. I can always connect the phone put the pin and place it in the cradle...

And I was thinking that it may not be that difficult to retrofit as I alredy have some parts. (at least I think I do, from the old installation).

Is it so different fiscally? I mean it works by BT and all, one module must be different but is it all?

Thanks for the help! :D

It has been discussed before but I cannot remember anyone posting a diagram, the new approach is very different in the sense that the cradle only takes a few wires and there is no phone control unit etc.

You should be able to retrofit the new "cradle plug" and make use of the antenna wiring. If you want to have wiring diagrams, someone from the forum may print those for you. But I would have expected you to have these already when you starter working with the NTG2.5.

Yes I have access to the wiring diagrams, but I never looked at the telephone wiring before...

Thank you for your help, I'll try to search a little more for any experience before I start taking thing apart :)
