Does anyone know whether I can use the USB port on the front of my PS2 and link my laptop to it and use that as the display so that wifey can watch Emmerdale on the TV whilst I just hook my laptop up and use that to play Tiger Woods on ?

Cheers

Stuart

I think that you'll find that the USB port on the PS2 is very limited in functionality - just steering wheels, keyboards, mice, dance mats, etc.

Do you have a composite video input on your laptop?
If so you should be able to hook up the laptop to the video output of the PS2 with an adaptor of sorts. (Not via the USB port).
Alternatively, if you have a TV card in your comp you can hook it up to that.
I have done this on my son's comp.

I would say that you were spot on there!
Whether that particular make works well or not I can't say as I don't have one but for the price seems cheap enough to have a go.
A comp video input on the laptop will have a symbol of a TV like figure on it.
It normally comes in a DIN type connector and the laptop would have a RCA to DIn cable supplied with it.

Yep, there you go talking that language I don't understand again :p :D

I have a Dell Latitude D600, it has 3 sockets in the back (one is all spiky and is labelled IOIOI, the next is female - lots of holes, labelled [[]] where the inner two brakets meet to form a box/TV shape and the last, female again, looks like it is for a printer).

So are we talking about the [[]] fella in which case, all is well but where would I go to get a lead that fits this and then links to the yellow, red and white leads from my PS2 ? Is it that simple ?

Should I just put my laptop and PS2 bask in their respective boxes and take them back to the shop explainig I'm just too stupid to own either ?  :D

Thanks for the help so far by the way Mac

Hello,
I have looked at Dell's site and the D600 does have a comp video connector. However, I think it is only an output and NOT an input.
That means that you could hook up your laptop to a video input such as a tv and view the screen on a telly but will not facilitate as an input.
Sorry.
I think your best bet is to grab that PCMCIA card you saw on e-bay.

I have a D600 also and there is no input, only an output. The ports you listed are:

Serial
VGA Out
Parallel

None of these will do the job, as machasm mentioned there is a composite connection on the laptop (on one side IIRC) but this is for output only, not input.

Sorry :(

You can buy a VGA connector for the PS2 and connect it to a monitor using the component out setting. This doesn't work for all games I might add!

A USB or PCMCIA tv card (aka, grafics card with video in) will work; assuming you have a USB or PCMCIA port that is :P

That wont work, the laptop (as most laptops) wont have a VGA-in connection. They may have a composite or s-video in, but its VERY rare to find a VGA-in. VGA out is more common...

Just to further spoil your day, screen updates via these kind of TV adaptors, especially on ones suitable to work with laptops, can render games unplayable due to the delay caused by signal buffering and image optimisation.

Can you get your wife interested in reading instead? :)

What about using one of these?

S-Video to VGA

Thats only good for outputting to a TV or other source.
You wont be able to hook the PS2 to it as you will need an input on the laptop not an output.
Also the point that Rose chap mentioned is valid in that you will get a slow response from the display. i.e the display will lag behind the actual gameplay so would be a problem with most fast paced action type games.
mac.
