How about a Saab 9-5 (ok a vetra underneath) but lots of toys and either a 2.2d or 3.0d, brother had the Aero Hot estate and it had every toy under the sun.

Depends what he needs room wise but the Xtype / c class type cars are quite small, especially in the back / boot space

What millage doe he do?

Current choice no brilliant and I'm not sure I would have either.. the BMW probably is the 'best ' on paper but then its still a bmw...

are you sure the SAAB 9-5 is based on the Vectra?? I thought the 9-3 was and the 9-5 was a joint platform with Fiat Croma ...but I stand to be corrected..

More BMW 3 series are sold than Mondeos ... so if you are into badge snobbery the Ford Mondeo is more exclusive..... well done Robert...

I suppose |I should apologise for nominating the Mondeo which was not listed and so might be deemed going off topic.

Apologies
John

Why? the X class Jag was one of the cars mentioned which is based on the Mondeo...

He's not a car geek, he is however, image concious.
He does about 8-10 k a year and for a long as I've known him, keeps his car for a max of 3 yrs...

He didn't mention saab - so I guess its off the radar....
Mondeo and subaru's he wouldn't even consider......
size - well there's only himself and his lady.

The Merc is a 2003 so not galvanised and frankly not worthy anyones money. The X type has to be ruled out because of unreliability (seriously troubled car) The BMW has an image problem but is otherwise a reasonable car.

Its not really a good choice.

What about adding other cars to the options?

at what point did they start galvanising c classes - or mercs in general ?
Is it a problem it's not galvanisied ? seems a bit harsh to say "not worth anyones money"

what about a Lexii ( it's the Japanese Mercedes) according to A.P. of Norwich

LOL - thats probably why he wouldn't - cos I'd rip him to bits and I wouldn't be alone ! If he bought a lexus it'd last 3 months at the most and his pain would last a lot longer.....

He currently drives an A4, and I think he's board of vw/audi.

They were galvanising them by the end of 2003, so best look at 2004 onwards to be sure. The problem is that the non-galvanised ones are still prone to the rust that plagued Mercs for the previous ten years, i.e. paint starting to bubble at only three years old.

Speaking of other cars, how about an Audi A4? Image quite prestigious, although unfortunately associated with people who drive an inch behind you on the motorway, flashing their headlights.:)

Volvo S40? Not as prestigious, but those I know who have them (2 people) consider them excellent value for money.

yeah I mentioned volvo - he kind wrinkled his face like he'd eaten a chilli and muttered "caravans".... which is fair I suppose

my mate test drove a new A6 2.0 and thought it was ok but wanted more power so orderd the A6 2.7 turbo derzel

picked it up friday, done 96 miles and hates the car as its lack luster and bland and like a barge!

he is going to take it back

I have an X type A Mondeo and a new E-Class for the money the E-Class is RUBISH
Oi!!! :D :D

We have NEVER owned a car for longer than three years until this present one! Our E-class is 4.5 yrs old and my wife would have me singing solo if she even thought I was considering replacing it!

If this person could afford, or wanted a 211 E-class then I would unreservedly recommend this very nice car.

Buzz off over to the dark side :p (joke) (humour) :) (tongue in cheek)

How dare you slag off such a nice vehicle.

Now if Mercedes-Benz actually made an S-class estatethen I might agree with you

E-class Ruby ish How dare you

Regards
John

IIRC your E class experience has been tainted with bad reliability. Mine and Johns much less so, so I too am jumping into the W211 E class defence. However for the budget of the OP £10k will buy not very much E class compared to other marques and models

There is just the two of them, they only do 10K a year??

Why look for a boring box?

Get a convertible, SLK? A4, bm

I even stopped the other day Porsche Boxter (ok a 2.7 tiptronic) but in silver with the sports pack, leather, bodykit and 'S' exhaust 90K miles at £8300 !! private plate looked superb..

Enjoy it while they can :)

2 is probably going to become three or maybe four

to keep this going... if you had 10 k, what would you buy ?
those kia's with their7 year warrenties look very inviting - I'm sure you could have it debadged !

In their situation a Volvo V70. Reasonably good looking for an estate, relatively new refined and very comfortable. And of 2 does become 4 very useful. Still miss mine.
