Hi,

New R-Class (GST) (based on new M-class chassis etc.) to be shown at Detroit Show Jan 2004.
Fore-runner of Merc future Diesel/hybrid engines (more power/lower fuel consump[tion etc.)! Lexus to sell petrol/hybrid RX350 by end of 2004.
Must be the way to go?

More info @ http://www.carkeys.co.uk/features/product/1419.asp

Cheers,

Dieter

It probably is, but have you noticed how all hybrid-type cars are made to look "unconventional"?

If they made them look more normal people might actually buy them! ;)

Otherwise that GST isn't bad at all! :)

Exactly the point. The GST and the Lexus ARE 'normal'.

Oh? I thought the GST looked kinda radical and ugly, maybe the design is a "grower" :)

Hi Shude,

Unlike the Prius the diesel/hybrid for the GST/R-class is an engine 'option' i.e. it's not specifically a hybrid vehicle. Therefore I class it as 'normal'. Wether you like its looks or not is down to you :D

This shows that engine hybrid technology is just around the corner, albeit initially in 'bigger' vehicles (battery weight etc.). As battery weight/size decreases the possibility of getting an 'extra' 60 BHP electric motor tacked on to a 2.2 diesel in a C- class, for example, would be pretty cool. You get more power, better fuel economy and less exhaust emissions. Win-win situation (assuming it all works ? ).

Cheers,

Dieter
