Hi. Just inherited a 500SL, 1989. I'm trying to prepare it for winter storage and waiting for a gap in the weather before valeting, drying out then covering up.

Battery was nearly flat after storage, and the horn started going off…. and wouldn't stop all the time battery was connected. Battery fully charged and horn still goes off. If I push the steering wheel, it just goes distorted.

Checked the manual - fuse 8 apparently is the horn amongst other things. I pulled the fuse, but its still going off. Looked in the engine bay to pull wires etc and I see that the horn is fixed to the bodywork near the washer bottle. Very difficult to get to and I ended up accidentally breaking the connector - still , the horn has stopped now.

Also, behind the glove box there is a ticking noise and I wondered if this was horn related. I have to disconnect the battery after switching off to stop this ticking.

This is all new to me and I'm not used to the car - hoping an expert on here may have some knowledge?

Thanks.john

Sounds like an alarm/immobiliser problem. Doe it have an alarm on the car?

Yes, I think so. Is the horn unit that is fixed to the bulkhead near the washer bottle for the alarm only? As there are 2 identical units below and each side of the radiator?
thanks

That would be correct. The two lower horns mounted on the front anti-rollbar drop extensions are the ones worked by the pad. Anything else sounds like it must be alarm equipment.

Good call Ray.
.

The ticking noise behind the dash is because you have inadvertently activated the car's self destruct sequence.;) -------no---- RAY'S call is a good one. These alarm Sirens have an internal rechargeable battery to keep the alarm sounding if power is disconnected from the main battery. You may have to connect everything back up and then lock /unlock the car to arm/ disarm the alarm and siren.

Hopefully a good battery charge will sort it all out. Now i've got to re-connect the wires to the horn. And as for getting that No 8 fuse back in…. can barely get down there…. in fact, I can't!
