R129 SL500 side window won't close/go up. Any ideas?

Hey folks,

Was out today and was heading home so we decided to drop the soft top as it was lovely. So the windows dropped, roof stows, and windows go back up, all as per normal, lovely, but as we were crawling along through traffic (immediately after dropping the roof) we decided to drop the windows till we got some pace on.

Head out on the open road and the passenger window won't close/go back up. Decided to pull over and check it works with the roof, so we close and open the roof, and on the last cycle both the windows go up again.

Leave it till we get back and park up. Drop the window to test it, and it doesn't close. Put the roof up, drop the window to test it, and it doesn't close although when locking and holding down the button it closes (as it always does)

So I think the centre console passenger rocker button/switch is broken (the up/close bit anyway). Can anyone confirm this and offer a solution? Is it an easy fix I can do myself (Lord knows how you get underneath the console though) or am I going to be at the mercy of Mercedes main dealers? Thanks in advance.

i never opened one for w129 but i have done for w124 convertible u have to take easy though loads of delicate switches including your roof is their, probably test passenger side if it is operational from the button, the switch could be universal, and u can switch them note the mercedes part no it could w124 or w129 so then can get it from scrappy or if u feel flush from mercedes

Hi, I have a similar issue.... I purchased my '91 500 SL last weekend (with the hard top not opperating, but that's an issue for later), but the passenger window won't go all the way up. It goes down no problem, but on its way up it stops 2 inches from the top!

I've read through many posts (and learn't a lot

), but can't find someone with a similar issue. I've also printed off the SL manual, but can't see how to synchronise the windows - but may be this isn't the solution anyway??

Someone helped gently pull the window up the last 2 inches (whilst i pressed the up button), but i don't want to keep doing that in case i break it!

Can anyone help?

I've been informed that the window regulator needs replacing..

Can anyone confirm this?

yes it will be the window reg i replaced mine last week £130 from MB

Thanks rajinder. I'm going to try and lube up the window reg this w/e. If this doesn't work i'll have it replaced..

ya but dont forget u need pop rivet gun

You can replace the rivets for small nuts and bolts. The rivets are huge and beyond most domestic rivet guns capability.

Thanks for your feedback guys.
I took it to a local merc specialist and they lubed it and greased the runners.
I was going to remove the door pannel myself, but thought i'd only make it worse.. or create another problem.
Working fine now!

resync is usually remove battery or open and close the windows fully 3 times with the doors open pls advise i think i seen this before
