Greetings, citizens.

Looking at the assyst on my 2006 SLK55, it's saying that it will need a "E" service in 3000 odd miles. Now, given that the last service was a "B" and ended up rushing me ~£800 this sounds somewhat alarming. Does anyone know what constitutes an "E" service - is it going to be megabucks or does it say "wipe over car with chamois"?

TIA!

Cheers,

Gaz

The car's ASSYST system doesn't use the same lettering as the dealer. The car uses A to H to give a relative idea of service duration, and the dealer uses A and B for minor and major.

ESS says it needs another major (B) service - the last one was only 6000 miles ago. Surely it's only an intermediate this time, or do AMG services go major, major, ooh really expensive, major?

I suppose I'd better get up the garage and find out. At least 3000 miles will take me through to the summer so I've got time to save up.. :(

Cheers,

Gaz

It sounds as though ESS has calculated the service needs as though the last service hasn't been performed. You need to fiddle the registration date & current mileage if the service won't be due for some while.

I'll see if I can find the invoice to see what it cost in the end.

OK, found the invoice (below). Seems like it was basically a major service plus brake fluid and combination filter. Came to £613.77 in total, but bear in mind that that was two-and-a-half years ago, VAT was only 17.5% and it was for a 350 rather than a 55 AMG.

Ten days ago We had precisely the same service performed on our ML63 AMG. MB Retail started at £525 and without really trying they came down to £437.

Franchised dealer who supplied the car quoted £510, and I didn't have chance to negotiate as they offerred to do it half price when I asked whether they'd be doing it free of charge as it was an approved used purchase less than 3 months ago.

Hopefully that gives you an idea of costs on a similar car, albeit in the Midlands.

Should they not have done it free if due within three months of sale date ?

The 30 day count down started within the three months, but I knew the service was not due until 2 weeks after the 3 month period, but I thought I'd still ask the question. It seems they knew too, as they offerred half-price, which I thought was fair but not great customer service. I also know there's still a fair profit in it for them at that price.

I actually had the service done elsewhere (anther main dealer) for the same price (£250). I happened to call in for something else and the service guy said he knew I had been a good customer in the past and hoped I could do business with them again. When I mentioned what the supplying dealer had said the service guy said he'd match it.
