Hello, new here, so this is my first post, also my first Mercedes and I've just given it it's first mod. Not much compared to some of you guys but it's a start.

Only 2 weeks into ownership but really dissapointed with the exhaust note. I had to take the engine top cover off to make sure it was a V8, sounded more like a six.

Checked out posts on exhaust mods but didn't want to play around with the cats so settled on replacement silencers but wanted to retain the original oval tips, not so easy.

Okay so when you're a little bored, you've got a shiney SL and a garage full of heavy duty tools what are you going to do? What's the worst that could happen apart from a little blood loss which to me has always been acceptable and usually inevitable when breaking out the power tools.

First off I removed the silencers and of course gave in to the temptation to give it a run around the block. It was fun but way too loud and I didn't think the sound suited the car. This showed me I was going to need to fit a silencer of some sort.

I wanted to see what was going on in the original silencer so never one to ignore my curiosity I let loose with the angle grinder. Once I'd opened it up it was clear to see why the silencer was so restrictive.

Next I linked the inlet and outlets with a perforated tube then packed the body of the silencer with wadding, didn't get any pics of this as I didn't want to get any more blood on the camera, finally welded it all back up and refitted.

Now I've got an SL that can be quiet and refiined below 2,000rpm but with a great rumble through the rest of the rev range and sounds good in a refined sort of way. Not too loud but you know it's there.

Made a fairly crappy sound clip by dangling a mic out of the boot so it's fairly loud but gives an idea of what the effects of how the butchery sounds.

Acceleration feels more urgent and the engine picks up better, although the fuel consumption has gone down the pan but that's probably because I've had it locked in third and enjoying the rumble.

Never ignore an urge to take something apart, you never know you may be able to put it back together again as well.

Hello Malcolm, read a lot of your post, always useful. I can shoot round with the angle grinder if you'll provide the plasters.;)

That mod does make a nice noise :) says me thinking
That was a quick listen, the angle grinder is plugged in not sure I've got an extention lead long enough to reach Dorset though.

Angle grinders I have, I can do almost anything other than weld, I have good friends in my local garage.
The V6 gets through the MOT with the CATs taken out. this engine should be just as efficient

Was there any impact on your insurance?

A fairly common mod with the older V8s is to take the single centre muffler out of the system and replace with straight-through pipe (I've had this done). You can then leave the rear box standard (or replace with an AMG one :)).

WoW what a debut! :)

That sounds realy good, almost. Just a bit "splashy" and rasping for my taste. I would prefer something a little more sonorous.

Just my opinion :o

Hold on, I can explain I think. The splashy noise is a combination of tires on wet road and wind noise. The raspy bit isn't noticeable in the flesh so to speak but I think a lot of this is due to a cheap mic dangling about 4" above the exhaust pipe, didn't really experiment much with locations.
If it really sounded like that I'd agree with you actually in that it's not right but from inside the car it's just a rumble even with the windows down. I tried a recording from inside with the roof down but you can't hear that much to be honest other than a muted rumble from 3,000rpm but only with WOT.
I know it's not for eveyone but it's made the car 'more interesting' for me.
Bear with me chaps I'm a TVR convert so going cold turkey was always going to be difficult.
Thanks for the replies and opinions all.

TVR to Merc....

cool, are the TVR's as unreliable as we read?

Hope you enjoy the merc, maybe each night just losen some bolts holding stuff together or pull some switch gear off the interior to make you feel at home :)

Cheers

I don't know what an average production car silencer looks like internally, but I visited a workshop recently where they were fabricating a high performance exhaust, designed with maximum flow in mind. The silencer had just as you describe, a perforated tube from the exahust entering the box to the exit and the remaining space to be filled with a metal fibre woolly type stuff.

No not that bad for the performance, had a Griff 500 then a Cerbera 450, Cerbera did cost about £3k per anum not including tyres, insurance, petrol and oil but for the money there wasn't much you could buy that offered the same thrills and perfromance.
I like the idea of loosening a few screws on the Merc or did you mean me? becasue I've already got a screw loose already as you may have gathered.
David

it sounds like the SLR a bit i think that raw powerful sound.

Good going on the job, i wouldnt dare pay £40k for a car then rip bits open as i would be a bit to scared.

A bit drastic don't you think? I'd have gone with the reversible option of swapping the rear boxes for something a lot lighter in SS and kept the originals in the garage for when you sell the car. You do know how much these are to replace don't you?

He won't have to - it is provided as a little welcome gift with many Mercedes Motor Cars.

Unfortunately i cannot hear the results of your handywork - clicking on your link opens it in Notepad!,and trying to listen via Quicktime sends my lappy into appoplexy...
I`d like to listen to this, how are others able to download the soundclip?

However, well done for having the determination and bravery to carry out such a modification, the limit of most folks `alternative engineering` on here is swapping the pedals for shiney ones!

I`ve dabbled with exhausts for motorcycles and glasspacks offer a nice compromise of being muted/`wuffly` at low engine speeds/throttle but nicely raspy when at wide throttle..
