R230 Exhaust Mod

Raj & Stats, yep always a bit nerve wracking attacking something for the first time but to me a silencer is a consumable and I wanted to keep the orriginal tips and not go aftermarket.

No I have no idea what they cost but have seen the costs of some sports exhausts and those seemed a lot for what they were. I especially didn't want to cut the bumper for AMG twin ovals and am not convinced these are right on a stock 500 anyway. But that's all just my opinion.

Anyway I looked long and hard and didn't find much on this or other forums so decided I'd do it anyway so others can either learn by my mistake or have a go themselves if they liked it. It just gives some options that's all.

BTW it really isn't that loud, you have to gun it to hear it but remember the mic was only a few inches from the pipe, put your head next to your own exhaust and you'll get an idea of how exagertated the noise level is on my clip.

Esox, not sure why you can't open it, opens fine for me in media player though, If you like I can mail you the file if you mail me I'll send it to you. I'm at work right now so can do it this evening.

Malcolm, the 18bhp are you referring to the silencer mod?
Cheers
David

You will get an improvement, though to see 18bhp you'd need a complete system (100 cell cats and modified manifold etc).

Not worth the hassle on the Maser - the overrun that gives you the nice pops and bangs ruins the cats and at £1200 each I don't fancy replacing them!

If your going to replace the standard exhaust manifolds with aftermarket ones normally in the form of shorty headers you should really be looking for 20-30 extra horses and the associated increase in torque, good air filters alone have been independently proven to give 6-8 BHP more so for the silencer mod its probably not double figures but close.

David, very good work pal really thinking outside the box with that mod i like it.

20-30%? No chance I'm afraid. That would take it from 302bhp to 360/390bhp.

5% is realistic.

Thanks Dan, any increase is a bonus no matter how small. If I got any extra then great it was virtually free anyway. The main thing I wanted to avoid was creating a hole in the torque curve and affecting the driveability.
This is exactly what happened when I decatted my Cerbera, the low end torque was noticeable less but it seems the Mercedes is less sensitive to exhaust mods in this respect.
It definitely is quicker and the EPS is noticeably more active. So as long as it doesn't explode I'm calling it a success - for now.
Cheers

I'm sorry mate that was a mistype on my part i have now edited the post it should be 20-30BHP for headers alone on a NA engine as quoted by Kleemann here - http://www.kleemann.dk/site/Main/performanceproducts/headers

So your still looking at close to double figures for the the silencer mod, people have fitted cross pipes and gotten into double figure horsepower increases with no other mods.

Remember that the exhaust is the most restrictive component.

Some people have no thought for others when they put some of these links up:mad:

Whats next on the list David :)
Valve caps :D . Nothing planned really, I'm not a serial modder although I do like to see what people get up to with their cars. Just keep it standard really and stay out of the hedges. Do need to sort out some kind of phone hook up though. Not having the wiring for a cradle leaves me looking down the parrot root so I'll see what that brings. Other than that just had a tracker fitted which reduced my premium by £500, making it effectively free.
Oh, managed to snap something on the inner door handle earlier so that needs to be sorted, have to roll down the window and use the outside one. Only thing is it doesn't lock now so looks like I may be needing the tracker afterall.
I made a recording from insde the car on the way home tonight to give an idea of how little real world difference the mod makes (this is all getting a bit sad now you don't have to tell me). It ain't no nascar that's for sure.
I'll sort it out later and post it up.
Cheers

Reduced it by £500, I only pay £425 but thats life, if you want any help on the door cards or locks just ask, in between times I will go and polish my valve caps :cool:

Okay just to put the original clip into perspective (nothing if not thorough, me) I made a recording from insde the car, same crappy mic, with the rear quarters down. The mic was clipped to the roof up/down lever. The roads were wet so there's a fair bit of swish from the road and wind noise naturally. It was mostly conducted above 30mph but not much, officer ;) .

Maybe you'll agree it's not quite as raucous as the original clip made out. Much better in person though.

Oh, Malcolm, thanks for the offer re. the door cards. My local indy (mercaid) has had them off already. Seems the back of the inner handle has sheered off. Parts in on Monday so hopefully they can sort it. If not I'll get the grinder out again.
BTW jammy git on the inurance. I thought being over 40 let me into some secret cheap insurance club but a bag of sand was the best i could do. Have got a business loading on it though and don't live far from Basildon. That's where you go to get your hub caps back when they go missing in case you didn't know.
Cheers
David
No more recordings, honest!
