radar jammer

There is a chap here in Kent (next village to me) who was caught, prosecuted and jailed for using a modified "garage door opener" in his BMW Mxx series.

It was well publicised at the time in the national press. If I recall correctly he was caught after the police noticed that their kit was not working when he went past and also noted that despite being located where other motorists would usually see them and attempt to slow down, he didn't.

This led the police to note his reg and sieze his car. He argued in court that it was a Garage Door Opener, nothing more and he could not know that it jammed police equipment. His defense fell apart when the Police produced photo's that showed him "grinning and giving the bird" as he drove through the same trap on several occasions. Clearly he knew that the trap was not trapping him.

I believe it was described in court as fairly sophisticated in it's installation. It was located behind the fog light grille and was on permanently, using the cars power source.

I also believe it was noted that he did not have an electric garage door - whoops.

He did go to jail and it ruined his business.

Similar to the "number plate spray" that makes your plates "invisible" to ANPR. That is it's downfall. The Police will stop you as soon as they notice that their ANPR cannot read your plate.

^^^ Driver clearly stupider than a very stupid thing. Deserved jail time for being so stupid.

As I mentioned earlier I've been using a Road Angel (well several) for over 10 years. The basis of my purchase was that I travel over most of the South of England to inspect buildings.
All too often I was late because of traffic and in a bit of a hurry, didn't know the area and found more often than not a speed trap located in the sneakiest of places.
The Road Angel solved this because the top of the range models had a phone sim so if you saw a trap you pressed a button on the unit and everyone with that model was alerted.
I would estimate it saved my bacon on thirty plus occasions not because I drive like an idiot but because of the reasons above. OK someone had to drive through first to inform everyone but it works and still does work for me. My wife calls it my dummy and I can appreciate that point of view.
I did look at Valentines and other jammers but decided to just pay a bit more attention to the speed limit particularly 30-40 zones.

Moral of the story: do not commit offences if you live in a small village where you encounter same local plod every time :D

And obviously, make sure you have a garage door .

He must have made a very good impression on a sympathetic jury with his evidence. If it had been a prosecution to the civil standard of proof, I have no doubt he would have been convicted.

His defense seems to be ignorance. In so much as he was unaware of the use of the two items fitted that he'd ordered and been invoiced for.

Another great result for our justice system.

'Mr Craggs told the jury he thought it was only designed to alert him to the presence of speed cameras.

He said he asked for a device to be fitted “which would talk to me when a speed camera was close by” during a service in Houghton-le-Spring in 2009.

When he collected the car, he said two devices had been fitted and invoiced.'

I think he is either a very convincing liar, or he was telling the truth....

Additionally, trial by peers also tends to favour defendants who are of similar background as their jury.....

But the interesting thing is how people react when reading this.

On one hand there are those who will say 'Phew! That was a close shave! Better not try that myself'. On the other there are those who will say 'Huh! He got away with it! Will do the same...'

Do people still manually open their own garage doors.. .?

Next you'll be telling me they change their own gears...

What is the world coming to.. I blame the EU.
