Early days yet but initial enthusiasm has, I'm afraid, given way to some disappointment. The number of squeaks, rattles and poor fitting/alignment of panels in a car costing £54000 is completely unacceptable.
So rant over, to get back to the question...

Value for money - 3 (no car is "worth" £54000)

As I said initial enthusiasm has diminished somewhat. :bannana::bannana::bannana:

Some of the things I'm looking forward to when I get her back today - good Air-Con, good sound system, power, smoothness, decent automatic gearbox, a feeling of solidity about the car, and last but not least seeing the 3 pointed star on the bonnet again.

It's quite a good car in my view, though it's no hot hatch. But a remap next w/e should go some way to resolving that short coming.

VFM is an emotive subject, it was a dealer car so top whack for what it was, but compared to a new mondeo its so much more car. Now though the same money buys a V6 model of 2/3yrs old.

Its predecessor was a 4.4i V8 X5. The idea of 40+ MPG in a car was just a dream. I know the larger engined cars use not that much more fuel, but still late 40's on a run is very good.

Running costs: quite good, only dear parts let the game down.

Handling. Its really quite good, nice steering, decent grip and its fun to drive.

Ride is good, but the seat design isn't that good and the wheel doesn't scope out enough. Only this deducts this from being a 5/5

Style. Can't beat it.

Performance, well its ok for a 4pot derv, but would want a faster car next time around

Feel good/envy. A Merc at 25, following that star driving around. Motoring does not get any finer.

Value for money - Would Have been 5 if not for the problems in the first 2 months of ownership. Loving the car now though besides just having paid £218 for a new key :(.

Fuel economy - Most people thought I was mad buying a car that gets 16mpg. To be honest its noticeable but its not as bad as the fear merchants said. And I didn't buy the car based to its fuel economy.

Running costs - Servicing does cost a little more than a standard C Class but nothing over the top.

Ride and comfort - Previous car was a Volvo S80 which was like sitting in an arm chair. Its nothing compared to that, but again its not what I purchase the car for. Compared to an M3 however (which I've test drove) and its miles better on public roads.

Style - Maybe bias, but I think its the best looking 4 door saloon currently on the road today.

Performance - Mind blowing fast - Honest if you have never been in an AMG you have no idea.

Feel good/ envy factor - Itsthe only reason I still have the car, otherwise I would have sold it after the 2 months of ownership. Touch wood everything is OK and life with my C32 is good.

Steve my friend hes only 25 and he just bought a yellow 1998 ferrari 355 spyder, the CDi pulled infront of it in 1st and 2nd off the lights, lol but he started making up his fuse was blown and it went to limp mode:rolleyes:

Will have to see soon in the slk55:D

your next car should be a 320 CDi.

2006 CLS55 AMG

Value for money - 4

Cost less than a new E class saloon. It may a used car, but it still looks fresh (at least until the replacement comes out)

Fuel economy - 3.5
Really quite amazing on motorways .. 23 mpg for a 480 hp, nearly 2 tonne car

Running costs - 3
I never expected it to be cheap to run :)

Handling -4
Airmatic DC really helps when you're pushing on. Despite the size, it is actually surprisingly nimble provided you remember than Airmatic DC cannot overcome the laws of physics.

Ride and comfort - 5
Quiet and very comfortable on Airmatic DC "comfort". World class bump and thump absorption on London's 5th world pot holed roads.

Style - 5
One of the main reasons I bought it .. there is nothing else like it on the road. Low, wide, long and swoopy. A modern 'classic'. It's especially cool in Designo Mystic Blue with Designo Porcelain interior.

Performance - 5
Supercharged V8 .. one of AMG's all time great engines. Unrelenting performance. Incredible tunes when pushed, hushed when cruising sedately. Think, and you're there. No need to follow the car in front too close either -- better for visibility and safety.

Feel good - 4
I deleted 'envy' because I love the CLS for what it is, not for what I think others might think of me. I need to take it to Germany to really 'bond' with it :)

Rather too early in my ownership of my W124 coupe, given I have had it only two months, so long term costs and experiences don't count. I am also not given to high grading per se, having had many cars of different types I am scoring against those.

W124 Coupe E320 1995

Value for money - 3 (too early to say so average)
Fuel economy - 2 (but meaningless per se, it is the overall costs that matter)
Running costs 3 (too early)
Handling - 3 (good for what it is, but can't feasibly compare with a Boxster S or Lotus Elise which is my gold standard)
Ride and comfort - 4 (great seats, good ride except over really cut up surfaces)
Style - 4 (I think the word style here is misplaced. It is not a beauty, but it has the most consistent design integrity)
Performance - 3 (nice and fast, but lacks a bit of low down torque)
Feel good/ envy factor - 4 (with upside to 5 - it gives me the same sense as sitting in my Bentley and my Range Rover, but without the size) The envy of others is meaningless to me.

Daily driver 500SEL W126

Value for money - I paid £1300 , for that I got a large , safe , comfortable and totally reliable car - so 5 out of 5 for that !

Fuel economy - 18-20 mpg , 24 on a run - not bad for a 5 litre V8

Running costs excluding depreciation and fuel - the cost of servicing and maintenance, reliability, tyre wear and spares, tax and insurance? Depreciation zero ; in fact the car will be statrting to APPRECIATE soon - maintenance cheap and easy as I do it myself : have only replaced two ABS sensors outside of routine consumable items like oils , filters , discs pads etc ( have changed oil twice , am about to do again ; replaced all discs , pads , shoes when I got the car , will change pads again soon ) replaced rear tyres last year , just replaced fronts on Friday . In short have had 20,000 trouble free miles in 18 months ownership , have spent no more than £1K on maintenance : 5 out of 5 in my book .

Handling - sticks to the road, corners well etc : not that far behind my 190E 5 out of 5 for the size of car

Ride and comfort - interior finish, refinement? 5 out of 5 What more can I say ?

Style - does it stand out in the crowd or say something about you that you like Understated , conservative , classy , tasteful 5 out of 5

Performance - power and torque? More than adequate 5 out of 5

Feel good/ envy factor - does it make you feel good owning/driving it? All Mercedes have this in abundance 5 out of 5

280SE W126 project car

Value for money - is the car, for what you get, a fair price to buy? Paid £100 for it , can't get much better value than that 5 out of 5

Fuel economy - is it reasonable for the type of car? Expect it to be about the same as the 500 , having run other cars with the same engine so 3 out of 5

Running costs excluding depreciation and fuel - the cost of servicing and maintenance, reliability, tyre wear and spares, tax and insurance? Again , zero depreciation , will only go up in value - too early to tell for the rest but expect no different from the 500

Handling - sticks to the road, corners well etc Six cylinder car will be that bit more nimble than the V8 , but does not have the same reserve of power and torque to push it through bends

Ride and comfort - interior finish, refinement? More basic than the 500 4 out of 5

Style - does it stand out in the crowd or say something about you that you like? As above

Performance - power and torque? Goes decently , but no ball of fire 3 out of 5

Feel good/ envy factor - does it make you feel good owning/driving it? As above

1957 219 W105 Ponton

Value for money - is the car, for what you get, a fair price to buy? Paid £100 for it back in 1982 , was my daily driver for 10 years then used sparingly for a further 5 years , now worth many times what I paid - value 10 out of 5

Fuel economy - is it reasonable for the type of car? 20 mpg or so , probably OK for a 1950's car designed when petrol was likely something like 6d a gallon !

Running costs excluding depreciation and fuel - the cost of servicing and maintenance, reliability, tyre wear and spares, tax and insurance? Depreciation - what's that ? Maintenance is simplicity and cheap , parts still readily available - only job I had done in a garage was getting new ring gear heat shrunk onto the flywheel , done at same time as clutch replacement since everything was apart - car currently awaiting restoration as I am collecting the various parts required . When running maintenance was 5 out of 5

Handling - sticks to the road, corners well etc By 1950's standards , excellent 5 out of 5

Ride and comfort - interior finish, refinement? Isolates from the road like nothing today does , even more comfortable than the S Class , full length Webasto roof perfect on summer days 10 out of 5

Style - does it stand out in the crowd or say something about you that you like? Unique , individual , classy car ( there are a couple of other 219's in the UK , but mine is the only one with a sunroof ) ; I used it to tow a box trailer into an exhibition stand at the SECC some years ago , my showoff boss also drove his brand new 911 into the hall - there was immediately a crowd all round my car clamouring for a look and no-one was looking at the 911 - when my boss remarked on this I had to reply ' Oh , that happens all the time , John ' - thing was , IT DID ! ; it was nothing unusual to come back to the car to find people lookimg at it , with questions to ask , frequently with offers to buy , name my price etc , it was my first car bought with my own money and I'll never part with it , will go to my son or daughter . So 50 out of 5

Performance - power and torque? Only 85 bhp , but a 1950's 2.2 litre car that , even in the late 80's when I last had it on the road could still cruise all day at an indicated 160 kph ? Pretty good in my book . 5 out of 5

Feel good/ envy factor - does it make you feel good owning/driving it? Smile factor unequalled by anything else on the road : 10 out of 5

My Recent Purchase

I bought this '52 plate W203 A/G estate about 2 months ago from an internet dealer. He was happy to give me a 'steal' on sold-as-seen at trade price which brought the figure down to my level. Obviously there are significant risks with this type of transaction but given my lifetime experience in the trade I have always been confident in my ability to spot the really bad ones. This car looked 'right' and felt good from the very first time I saw it. The negotiated trade price was based on the fact that the car was very difficult to start from cold and had a dreadful rattle from the O/S front suspension. The seller also admitted that the Command Sat Nav didn't seem to work. After the cash changed hand I drove the car home, a distance of about 120 miles, without any further issues and the car performed really well.
Air bubbles in the low-pressure lines were soon diagnosed as the cause of the bad cold-starting and worn anti-roll bar link bushes were soon identified as the reason for the rattle. When I discovered the Tele-Atlas disc in the service book wallet a few days later I was delighted to find that Sat-Nav was working fine. My local indie garage charged my £120 for a set of new LP fuel lines and fitting. I fitted the Anti-Roll bar link rod myself - took less than an hour and the rattle was a thing of the past. I have done about 2k since I bought it and the car is an absolutely gem. Drives and handles beautifully and the dashboard MPG on a decent run shows 41 The only real problem I have now is getting my wife out of the driving seat as she also loves the car to bits.
This is my second Mercedes, the first was a '97 C250TD W202 which has served me well for the last six years, but this one is a total delight.
And the plate - well the photo obviously doesn't show the correct letters or numbers. While it may be easy to guess the missing number, the letter will take 26 chances to get that - OK

S210 E320 1998 (pre-Facelift) Avantgarde Estate in 189 Smaragdsswarz Metallic (which is Black Opal, not Green-Black) with sports chassis, fully loaded etc, 18-in staggered AMG alloys.

Value for money
- 4 (for what I paid for it s/h)
Fuel economy
- 4 (compared to what? - it's better than the Volvo 245 it replaced)
Running costs - Don't know yet, FSH so service and expect reliability
Handling -5 (the sports sus package works)
Ride and comfort - 3 (the sport sus package works i.e. is a wee bit harsh)
Style - 3 (AMG body kit from new but paint needs sorting and it's still a German taxi)
Performance
- 4 (adequate)
Feel good/ envy factor - 4 (Schadenfreude?)

and one more - Practicality - 5 (estate size - it's as big as the Volvo 245 it replaced)

I'm pleased with it.
Everything works except I'm having a bit of a 2s8d with the sunroof (parts=£2).

Had a very hairy-chested pair of TR7, so perhaps an unfair comparison: the S210/E320 has not got the instant acceleration nor cornering ability of a TR7 with lowered sus and a Kent cam, but it has got the edge on pace, no permanent hearing loss, and it has brakes.

Compared to the venerable Volvo 245 estate, the S210/E320 has more toys, almost the same load-out but surprisingly lacking on the same driver comfort, I still can't get the seat into a comfortable relaxed driving position. The Volvo's ride was better especially over long distances.

Since no-one has apparently done one so far --- 1991 E300D

Value for money - 5 - cost 8.5 tanks full of diesel at current prices, that has to be cheap for anything roadworthy.

Fuel economy - 4.5 - yes, very good for a 3 litre (diesel) lump in a heavy old car, especially good when cruising.

Running costs 5 - fully comp insurance costs less than road tax, parts are cheap if you need em, only thing time will tell is rust.

Handling - 5 - for what it is, handling is excellent

Ride and comfort - 5 - again, for a 20 year old car, very nice and comfortable

Style - 5 - simply because it doesn't stand out. It's like a tweed jacket, you might be a small farmer, or a country landowner, it doesn't actually say anything about you.

Performance - 5 - it's not a race car, it will cruise up Telegraph Hill at 70 mph with ease.

Feel good/ envy factor - 5 - it's relaxing, like an old pair of slippers.
