Hi as the title suggests i have a rattle at startup for about 3-4 seconds, only use to do it when cold but now does it hot or cold, if i turn off the engine and wait 30 secs - 1 minute it starts normally.

I have seen some youtubers with the same noise and it suggests the dreaded timing chain.

it is due an oil change would this make a difference? can be quite noisy?

anyone shed any light.

Car is a 2011 W204 220 cdi.

Are you sure the noise is coming from the engine. Mine has been rattling on start up for a couple of months, but I’m fairly certain that it’s something to do with the exhaust system. I’m hoping it’s just a loose heat shield - fairly common. I just haven’t got round to putting the car up on axle stands and having a look. BTW, my car is a 2012 W204 C350. Mine will have a different timing chain to yours so can’t comment on that.

Could be timing chain rattle and many will immediately say it is for sure and also say it is really common on this the engine (OM651) - it isn't and has become somewhat of an urban myth. I'm not saying it never happens but likewise I'm sure there was a recent poster on this forum who was also told it was timing chain rattle but turned out to be something else - you really need a professional to listen and give their opinion.

This sounds like the typical chain rattle.... it stretches and needs replacing. If you post up a video it’s pretty obvious.

If you need a genuine chain/tensioner and associated parts I have everything sitting here which I can get send over as my garage has closed for the foreseeable future so I can’t get mine fitted. All original Mercedes parts.

Regards.

Best thing to do is make yourself believe that it is the dreaded timing chain issue that has the potential to send you car to the scrapyard and work back from there.
But first , what mileage , service history, etc...?

Pete unfortunately there have been cases of cars with sub 80k and FMBSH suffering from this dreaded issue. :( it doesn’t seem related to servicing. Some say that start-stop adds to the issue but it’s a grey area.

Yes , I have heard of full MB serviced cars having the same problem. Is this the same engine part (Mitsubishi) in the C180/200 class 203 Kopmressor engines ?

Serviced yes , Stop Strain strikes again ?

Thanks all, i will record the sound today.

It was on mine, best way to tell is this.
Open drivers window and open bonnet, remove engine cover, shut drivers door. Start (with hand through dirvers window onto ignition) enigne and immediatly stick your ear to the back center of the engine. If you hear a mettalic clack clack clack for a few seconds its likely the chain. If its a tap tap noise or light rattle not from the back of the engine it could be a tappet or something else. I have heard the alternator pulleys can rattle.

If its the chain its usually quite loud and noticable even with the bonnet closed. I first noticed mine with the door open after starting the car in alton towers car park of all places.. lol

Not the end of the world if it needs doing. and not as bad as some may say...

The title of your mp3 describes it well.

Yep definitely the timing chain & tensioner just like mine sounded. Where are you based as the local indy near me has done a few of these mine included. Very reasonable priced job to.
