Firstly thanks to those of you who replied to my previous thread. I am a newbie on this forum and it is nice to feel welcome. As mentioned i took my c32 for the B service and the chaps at Stockport benz mentioned that The rear Diff is leaking oil and that I should get the seals changed in the next month or two.

Does anyone know what this entails. I had a read on the web and apparently the rear diff always looks a little "wet" and that If i have never seen any oil on the garage floor or driveway then it is probably ok.

On a separate note - i was given a 2008 E220 cdi avantgarde auto for a day. Very smooth, not that econmocial (32.9 mpg) and very sluggish off the line but once moving - a very comfortable cruiser.

Having said that it was nice to get 32 mpg, I normally get between 16-18mpg - city criving in Manchester all day!!

Pls let me know about the rear diff if any has any advice - as always much appreciated.

all depends on how much its losing... it could just be moist from overflow from the breather or it could be a seal...

Mine has been leaking for a long while, but as i understand it they're pretty sturdy.

I've just been topping mine up, but will be getting it fixed soon. I believe it's around 2/3hrs labour? Need to take out the drivshafts, drop the box down and replace whichever of the three seals is leaking.

This is from an owners perspective though, so i'm sure someone who has repaired one will be along soon :)

As Jay it depends on where the diff is leaking, thats if it is.
Hypoid oil will foam when hot and the can look messy.
Did the guy say where the oil was leaking, there are vents in the top, in the form of a valve usually and it might have become blocked.

Is the oil level low, has it been checked, so many questions, but need some more answers

Thanks for the replies - The dealer never specifed where the diff is leaking.

When the car had an MOT in Feb - I noticed that the Driver's side of the read diff had a "wet oily" look, and the other side looked clear and dry. The MOT guy was not bothered with this.

I suppose I can get an independent like 124 works to have look. I only went to the dealer for the service stamp - all other work i will get done through indies.

Yes Ian will give you an unbiased opinion.
If it lost just a touch in 12 months is it worth doing anything about it, if the vent valve on top is clear,is it worth spending several hundred pounds to fix it
