Rear Tyre Wear E Class Estate

The last rears on my E320CDI Estate (W210) lasted around 12,000 miles. They were 16" Toyo Proxes T1R's and I would have expected them to last longer than that. However, as others have said, there's a lot of torque transmitted through those rear wheels. If you want to experience REALLY rapid tyre wear, try a Volvo V70 T5!

Hi, I have had 275/35/18 Contisport 2 tyres on the back of two 211 estates.
The CLS rims covered 11,000 miles in the summer and wore just 2.5mm from new. Never towed a trailer and most of the running was intercity work. I thought the tyre wear was great, but the tyres were very noisy on rough or concrete surfaces. I now have Goodyear F1's which are much quieter.:)

My S60 ate T1-Rs in 6000 miles. Turbo volvos are a tyre fitters dream... Settled on Conti Premium Contact II on it in the end, about 25k from the rears and 16k from the fronts. on them, may try them on the Merc next time round.

Clue: We live in England;)

Pilot Sport even better apparently but I'm happy with my PP-HP.

IIRC Pilot sport is cheaper...

Just been quoted £400 pair fitted including VAT for the Michelin Pilot 265/35ZR18 PS2 97Y (as advised from Michelin UK) incidentally the garage will pump them up with dry nitrogen (no I don't want to start another topic on Nitrogen thanks!).
So I think I will try them, shame the Continentals on the front are barely worn?

I should have said mine is the sport model which I think has lowered suspension, when I was towing I stopped at some services and the tyres were hot, I expect that I may have bought the wrong model for towing!

I have a E320CDI Estate, do next to no motorway miles and reckon my rear tyres (Pilot Primacy) wear at a rate of around 2,700 miles per mm – and I change them when they get down to 3mm!

I don't go in for the traffic light GP starts but these country A roads round my way with their bends and the repeated braking/acceleration take their toll (and, OK, I could be a bit lighter with my right foot :o ).

I have the same car and get 15k from rears.Contis have let me down though. They can take several days to get in to stock a pain if you are on spacesaver. They also have no rim protection and the slightest puncture, the walls crack and tyre is unrepairable.

Costco?

Have you tried Costco? they specialise in only Michelin and do the nitrogen fill.Worth a try ,thats if you have one nearby.

Sorry, down here in the deep South (Bournemouth) I don't think there is a Costco, the nearest one is Bristol?

Contis and Toyo T1r are both quite soft compounds not likely to give good wear , i use Goodyear Eagles and have done since i switched from the standard equipment Mich primacy which were nasty in the wet.

Dry and wet weather grip is excellent with Eagles and they should give 18-22,000 miles in my experience.

OK two new things:-

1) I have had the gearbox in "sport mode" maybe with the 320CDI torque there is an element of wheelspin on startups? I know that my wifes SL500 was causing us grief as she started with the same 7 speed gearbox and was very abrupt. Therefore I am experimenting with using the "comfort" mode

2) The tyre fitter advised that for towing he would raise the rear pressures by 10psi

2) The tyre fitter advised that for towing he would raise the rear pressures by 10psi

Do you mean 10psi beyond MB's recommended pressures for a full load, or 10psi on top of light load pressure?

By way of comaprison, our ML is 32psi front and 32psi rear with light load, and 32psi front and 39psi rear with full load (ie towing).

I must be driving wrong - just checked my tyre receipts and the last rear set did 43,000 miles before getting close to the wear limit. Std' 16" .5J was with 215/55 -16.

I do all motorwaty driving mind but do push the engine hard - not so much on the corners as that does tend to scrub the fronts bad.

Hi,

I recently got rid of Dunlop SP9090 tyres that I inherited with my car in June 2006 having got circa 6mm tread. They were all needing replacement after 20,000 miles in May this year and I swapped to Goodyear Eagle F1.

Car is E430 saloon, not towing and general A road with occasional motorway runs as usage pattern. All round 235/45 17". Not sure if relevant or helpful but tyres have a load rating as well as speed ratings. The Dunlops were 94 the Goodyears 97. Higher number apparently indicates additional strength. That may be worth looking into as part of research into alternative tyres?
