Reasons why I love my SClass!

As a London (scooter) rider I totally cannot see how you can think that bikes filtering are unsafe for you in your big Merc... Even if one did hit your car the biker will still be worse off no matter what, so point 3 is bull.

I bet you're one of those loosers that feels he has to race bikes at the lights just because they got there after you by filtering through traffic. Probably you're the type that also purposedly gets in the way and doesn't let bikes through?

Tsk tsk... We will still get there before you in traffic, even if wet and cold :p

I wouldnt stand a chance racing a bike in my car, whats the point its not a sports car!

I dont waste my time racing some angry person on two wheels when I am surrounded in the luxury of my W220!

As I said all along my comments only relate to a MINORITY of bikers not the entire biking community. This thread is in danger of being mis interpreted! The guy that I mentioned in previous posts who had the accident was a pratt, pure and simple. He was a young inexperienced rider with a chip on his shoulder against car drivers. How he spoke to the woman that knocked him off was unacceptable even though 3 separate witnesses had already told him and the police who was to blame.

Its this kind of minority behavior that I am referring to!

So that's what W220 drivers are like? Wow - the engineering wasn't the only thing to go low-rent after the W126...

:D

Reasons that I like mine are:

The seats are big enough to accommodate my fat ar$e.

The seat goes back far enough to accommodate my monkey arms.

The seat and wheel move back to let me in and out.

I drove 11 hours in a day last week and felt fine afterwards.

It's a big car and feels safe.

It's a Mercedes and other cars just don't feel the same.

Enjoyed point 1 a lot....

Not sure about the others so I'll add

X) The pleasure I feel when I first look at the car in the morning

Y) The feeling I get when I sit in the car

Z) The looks (good and bad) when I drive it

And just general pride :D

I dont have anything against bikers up until a few years ago I was part of that club too and very much enjoyed riding my ZX9R. What does annoy me is the complete lack of respect for other road users demonstrated by some bikers but this seems particularly a problem in the slow moving M25 traffic. I witnessed a guy on a CBR last week who must have been doing 35mph in traffic that was crawling being hit by a lady in a Corsa. The Corsa driver did everything correctly indicated and slowly moved into the centre lane. The bike simply couldnt stop and was knocked off. Luckily for him the traffic in the centre lane was travelling so slowly as he would have been hit by oncoming traffic and certainly killed or badly injured.

The poor girl was very very shaken but I acted as witness. It was the bikes fault 100%....

I heard somewhere that filtering was going to be made illegal in slow moving traffic?

I ask this question to learn rather than to have an argument, but is it the bikers fault ?

I would have thought, (putting myself in the position of the car driver), that it would have been my fault for not checking my mirrors before changing lanes ?

you can only see so far back in your mirrors in a traffic queue especially if the road is curved, if anyone, car truck OR bike, is approaching at a speed that has them obscured by following traffic but going to fast to stop then it's not your fault.

I was riding bikes for years untill i crashed my old Elsie and it nearly killed me, lost a kidney and a rib, damaged my liver and my family were told i wasn't gonna make it so i gave up owning bikes, i've had a few goes on mates bikes since then and personally i think the standard of riding overall has gone down, where as many riders were on bikes years ago because it was cheap and conveniant, these days more people are on bikes for fun, the proportion of bad riders has gone up, i definaetly see more idiocy these days.

Its fair enough to say why worry? the guy on the bike will come off worse if he hits my car, but why would i want someone who isnt being carefull causing me all the hassle about getting my car fixed?

i do know good riders and i do "think bike" but its hard to stay neutral when you live almost on top of the M25 and 15 mins from high beech, its bloody murder round here on sunny sundays.

I think Mercedes-Benz have missed a trick here and should get you onto their marketing team. Maybe MB should ask you to design their new S Class range, with crushing the unemployed ex-bankers and their starving ex-nannies into the pavement while they wait for the bus especially in mind. How about an up-gunned King Tiger tank with massage seat, DVD entertainment and a large water bed for the ex-nannies you pick up on the way to your next war?

Got to say I admire your brass neck.

wonder if she thought to look in her mirror before she pulled over; bet the bike had its lights on too.......

Bikers get themselves a bad name then try to blame car drivers.

Less than 22% of collisions involving cars and motorcycles involved a motorcyclist who rated as either fully or partly to blame for the accident according to the department of transport research.

Department of Transport said:
Right of way violations
Of the total cases, 397 (37.5%) involve ROWVs. However, only 21.4% of these involve a motorcyclist who was rated as either fully or partly to blame for the accident. The majority of motorcycle ROWV accidents have been found to be primarily the fault of other motorists.

When these cases are examined, it can be seen that the most common failure of other drivers in motorcycle accidents is a failure in the continuity of their observation of the road scene. Over 68% of ROWV accidents where the motorcyclist is not regarded as to blame involve a driver who somehow fails to see a motorcyclist who should be in clear view, and indeed frequently is in view to witnesses or other road users in the area.

Despite this, car drivers have conditioned themselves to only look for other cars on the road, and not motorcycle riders, and typically blame them in the event of a road accident for careless riding.

I guess you fit squarely into this stereotype Dieselman.

I think you (and some others in this thread) are about as biased regarding motorcylists as I am of lycra wearing cyclists. (a particular section of society who in my view should be hunted down with dogs) :D

On the topic of filtering...

DoT said:
Though less than 5% of the whole sample identifiably involve a rider filtering, other drivers are over twice as likely to be considered at fault in such accidents compared to the motorcyclists involved.

So to all the self righteous critics of filtering in this and other threads, try and remember to look out for bikers and please remember that even minor impacts involving bikes often result in life threatening injuries as opposed to simple fender benders. Filtering is perfectly legal and joking about knocking off filtering bikes from the safety and comfort of a big car is frankly shameful.

In light of the above, it's insightful to say the least that your version of "doing everything correctly" doesn't even mention looking .

look - signal - look again (over your shoulder this time) - then manoeuvre

If this simple act was performed by said corsa driver, it would be impossible for there to have been a collision.

How dare you use logic to argue against the nasty evil biker, poor poor lass :p

At 35mph the distance to stop is seen as 150 feet, or 45 metres. Hell you could do that by just using the rear brake in the wet.

Either the biker was blind or the driver didn't check properly and gave no chance of avoiding a colision between vehicles.

The problem with people is that they check their mirrors, they don't look. When you use your mirrors you see if anything is there, give an estimate on the speed of what is there, size etc etc.

Dave!

Not quite sure why this thread has descended into a debate on the riding abilities of the entire biking community as I have said in nearly ALL of the previous posts this relates to a MINORITY and this pratt was one of that minority...

Oh and she did look over her shoulder and in her mirrors the bike filtered round a bend in the road at excessive speed and stood no chance of stopping in time. That is whats on my witness statement anyway and she has three others supporting her.

How about we get back to the original purpose of this thread.

I love driving my SClass because

1 When I finally part with it it can have it recycled so it can help all of the flowers and bunnys grow for future generations

2 The leather seats can be recycled into comfy footwear and sent to third world countries

3 I can convert the large boot into a warm and cosy nesting area for foxes to raise there young

4 The silver colour reminds me of stars twinkling in the night sky

5 It has an extensive toolkit in the boot, many of the items can be used to perform basic veterinary care to animals injured on the road

6 I can fit several injured deer in the car and ferry them to vet in total luxury, thus improving there survival chances

7 I can use its load space to deliver meals on wheels to an entire community of elderly people

8 I let underprivileged children use the TV feature in the car to watch stimulating and educational open university programs

9 The size of the car allows me to cut a swathe through traffic, thus clearing the way for poor oppressed motorcyclists

10 I can set up a powerful refracting telescope through the sunroof and use the car as a mobile observatory, and marvel in creation

How is that? Less offensive?

much better :D

I have already donated my SClass to the local college so that poor underpriviliged yoofs can learn the joy of motor mechanics. They may name in wing in my honor!

I feel so much better I am going to place a red rose on every motorcycle that I see now....

From this day forth I shall preach about the joy of wearing leather clothing and silly looking space helmets when your on your way to the shops....

Thank you for pointing to the path of righteousness, I see the error of my ways!

Peace love and unity to all

Whatever you do, be sure to keep out of the V8 lane would you, us Mr Toad types don't like being held up by such undernourished 4 wheeled fripperies of the wannabe stock broker ;)
