Hi Team,
W202 1995 220D Elegance auto.
After getting a rattling noise from my engine bay I popped the bonnet to find the smell of warm friction. I placed the palm of my hand adjacent, but not touching, around several engine components to find the air con pump feeling unusually warm ( the a/c was not on ). I spat on the electromagnet area/front face and it sizzled it was that hot. I also noticed that there were several specs of small metallic particles around the fan belt area and the front anti roll bar. I then noticed that the pulley wheel bit, where the belt drives it, was running off centre exposing polished metal at one end and a tight fit at the other. I then switched the air con on and the wheel ran central and the rattle went away. When the air con was switched off the pulley wheel went off centre again and was causing friction. It appears to be getting extremely hot, possibly to the point of seizure.
Questions
Can this bearing be replaced?
Or do I just need to slacken off the v belt slightly?
Does the full pump need to be replaced ? new or second hand ?
Is it a DIY job taking in to consideration it will need re gassing
How much am I talking ?
Thanks Team

PS went to the local MB dealer tonight. They were very helpful and said it was a retro fit and not standard. If it is, its a very good job all the correct wiring, radiators, switch gear etc. Seems a long way to go for a/c as a retro fit . It also appears to operate as per original handbook. The MB dealer said two choices, just keep the air con on all the time or they will take the pump off, fit a smaller belt and try to find someone who can fix it, no guarantee .
Does anyone know if I can trace the original fit on my car as it left the factory or anyone out there who they think may be able to repair of replace.
Thanks Merc 808
