Remote Batteries on SL55

purchased some new batteries for the 2 keys the other week from a local shop, replaced them, they both worked fine.... but after a few weeks both keys have lost there range on unlocking the car.....

am i missing something? do the keys lose there coding when the battery is changed or did the shop just sell me duff batteries?

Sounds like duff batteries if they worked to start with.
