hi

is it ok to run the engine of a M110 engined R107 without the vbelt on? I need to locate an exhaust manifold leak and its hard to test with the breeze caused by the radiator fan.

i only want to idle it like this for a few mins in order to pin point the leaks.... not drive it etc.

is this advisable? sounds feasible to me but just want to check...

cheers

Does it have a slipping clutch, if so the put on your thickest gloves and slow it down and stop by hand or other suitable item.

not sure.... i thought about this as i believe they should be able to stop. however i dont want to end up breaking it as no doubt a replacement fan is £££'s for the 107 like most stuff.

i know how to remove the belt - just not sure if it will cause problems if the stuff it drives arnt getting driven whilst the engine is running.... i know things like the water pump etc wont be working but i will only be running it for a min or so to try and find any leaks.

the car has failed the MOT on exhaust leak. I've fixed the obvious leak at the bottom of the downpipe, which i fixed last year but it appears the bolts have rattled a bit loose. kicking myself for not checking it before putting it in for the MOT...

but they also say in addition to this, there is a leak at the manifold but i cant find one, but its hard with all the air from the fan blowing around too.

i -think- the downpipe leak is the only leak, but i would like to be 100% sure before putting it in for the re-test.

I need to try and fix all this tonight.

thanks in advance!!

Derek

It's a viscous fan. Tie a blade to something rigid to keep it from turning. Not to be tried with the engine red-hot all the same but you will have lots of time from cold to source your leak.

Thanks.

I ended up just undoing the 3 10mm bolts that hold the fan on and then tying it in a position out of the way of movement with some string.

I then realised the manifold has no leak at all.

the only leak is from the bottom of the Y piece where there is the confusion over seals on the EPC.

I fixed it last year but it looks like the bolts have come loose. I've replaced the bolts and also put some "gun gum" in there to seal it nice.

Back into the MOT tommorow for the re-test. Hopefully it will now pass without problem. they were pretty adimant that the manifold was leaking but its not so i'll have to get them to show me if they still insist it is to prove them wrong!

Annoying as i did ask them to just tighten the downpipe bit up and put some seal on it (to avoid the £25 retest fee if you drive it away) but they said as the manifold was also bad then they couldnt do it as they didnt want to risk snapped threads on old cars  as it turns out all the fix required was a couple of mins with a spanner and some seal stuff. :wallbash:

Want it re-MOT'd tomorrow as we want to go away in it over the long weekend. Probably one of the last trips it will do this year.

cheers

I bet its one of those places that offers cheap MOT's but you have to pay for re tests...

Yes the test was £35. However the W124 passed this year and last year. To be fair the exhaust was blowing badly anyway so it should of failed (i should of checked this myself - i checked the rest of the exhaust back).... hopefully they wont make a point about the manifold. If they do i will have to insist they show me where they have a problem as i cant see one. I booked it in today and i told them that i couldnt find a problem and said maybe it was just the other bit blowing and they did seem to agree its possible.... but it wasnt the tester i spoke to.

we have a pass now :bannana:
