Hi all, I've just found the forum and it looks good so far. I've searched but haven't found the answer to my question.

Today I picked up my E220 CDI from its previous owner and want to start sorting some minor niggles to get it closer to the perfect condition that it deserves to be in.

Several jobs to do, the first being to replace the (broken) electric mirror control joystic that lives in the centre console behind the gear selector. It looks like I need to remove the wood trim around the selector and switches but I can't see how.

So: How does the switch come out? Assuming that I need to remove the wood insert, how does that come apart?

All hints gratefully received.

Ian.

EDIT: it's a 2001 Avantgarde model if that helps ;)

Try removing the black trim round the gearbox and see if it lifts up. Ive got a feeling the W210 is similar to the w202 in that respect.

Again, I'm guessing but if its the same as on my W124 (likely) then you need to firstly do as fuzzer says and then depending on whether your centre console has a built in armrest or not, locate the single screw that holds the wood veneer in place at its very rear most point. An mine, I have no armrest so I have to lift up the carpet in the centre console. hidden under this is the screw. Once done, you can hinge up the panel from the rear. The mirror controller lifts up with the panel.

Ian,

You are correct, the best way to remove the wooden panel is to open the storage box in front of the armrest, then gently lift the wooden trim up from the rear. When I first started doing this I used to remove the plastic trim from around the gear stick first, but now I don't bother it just comes up with the wooden panel.

Once you have removed all the cables, the switch assembly is easily removed from the wooden panel.
