Can this be done DIY?

I would like to remove the lacquer so I can polish the diamond cut lip properly and keep it pristine. The lacquer is ok, but to my trained eye has a few small faults.

I quite like the look now I have it, so don't want to get them painted like my old ones unless I can help it.

I've found it is quite easy to remove on a kerb.

Hope that helps!

No where's that, no it bloody didn't button!

lol:D :D

You might get some tips tomorrow G;)

Personally, I wouldn't bother Graham.
They are a bugger to keep clean.
I'm gonna get mine re-furbished soon and have the lacquer put back on:crazy:

Have any of you guys got a spray gun as you could allways spray a 2 pack laquer on yourself. I might do it myself in the summer if I don't buy some new wheels.

I have the complete kit.
I would be very careful if I were you if you spray 2K paint without the knowledge of :
1) How to mix the correct quantities of it up (ie: lacquer to hardener to thinner ratios)
2) How tricky and runny it is if you are not experienced and
3) How dangerous it is as it contains Xylene, Tolulene and Isocyanite. (1 slows your heart rate down, 1 buggers up your breathing and the other will try and kill you if the others don't succeed).
HTH;)

One of the reasons I said I world wait to the summer is I have used it before. As it was my first time using it I did it in my garage, with no extraction. I nearlly ended up in MARS, of my head. Dangerous stuff. It will kill you before you know it and that is no exageration.

Tell me about it:crazy:
When I worked for a peugeot main dealer (6 yrs in the body shop) I had a split in my air fed mask.
2 nights in the local hospital:o

if you were the type of person who cleans their car every other day then yep this is for you...

dont do it mate!

Graham230CK- if you just want to remove the lacquer, celluose thinners will do the job. From your query, I had the impression that you were not planning to relacquer but keep the rims polished. Is this right?

the best way to remove lacquer is to soften it, using paint stripper like nitro mors, i do this on a daily basis as i refubish wheels, but do a small section at a time as it dries out and makes the job harder, then all you do is wet and dry with fine grades to bring back the shine then use a cutting compound to bring a mirrior finish to the lip. thats all and if you want to add lacquer the best way is using a home power coating kit, all you do is electrolyse the wheel spay on the powder and heat gun it so its wet/wet look let it dry and there you go, or even better compund it slightly to give a better shine. merc man!

I used Nitromors and a wooden scraper. Mask off the painited section and be careful that the Nitromors doen't creep under the tape.

Mind you after a couple of years they need doing again as the laquer is knacked again.

If you cant be bothered to DIY, local tyre shop does mine for me, usually charges around the £100 mark for a full set.
And to keep them clean, spray wd40 on them after a wash during the winter.
