Anyone knows why on D1 form Notes E:

Your appliction will be returned to you if your photo is due to expire in 56 days...............

Are they saying if your photo driving licence is within 56 days it due to expire, the law is already broken?

Does this means we have to apply for a new licence well before it due to expire?

'...your photo is due to expire in 56 day...'

How can a photo expire?

Don't ask me, you may laugh at the crystal clear Welsh English on the government application form.:D

Maybe that what it trying to say, expired photo are not acceptable. Any photo taken more than 56 days are not acceptable. But then how do DVLA know it more than 56 days is beyond my comprehension.

A photo on a driving licence is only valid for 10 years. so you can't use the same picture. Good idea.
I get to see a lot of expired passports from young people and the photo is of a 10 year old. . . refused everytime. . . Often with a torrent of abuse from them.

The old paper licences were valid up to the holders 70th birthday.

The new PHOTOCARD licences are only valid for ten years, and have to be renewed every ten years.

Could this be what they mean ?

Damn, forgot to renew my Photo license. Is it possible to go back to paper one.

it's unlikely they'll allow that and close down the 10 year renewal income stream :)

What happens if your licence expires?

Do you have to take another test or do they just re-issue a new one for you?

I wonder what would happen if you got stopped with an expired licence

You don't have to take another test

So can I drive while my licence is renewed?
According to a DVLA spokesman, qualified drivers are still entitled to drive a vehicle if their licence has expired, but what they must be aware of is that they could be charged with the offence of failing to renew their licence. If the matter went to court, then the motorist could end up with a £1000 fine. The spokesman went on to say that the reason photocard licences needed to be renewed every ten years was because people's faces would change over that period, so updates are essential.

Hi,

You have to renew your photo before the date of expiry. The expiry date of your photo is shown in section 4b on the front of your driving licence.

The photo taken must be:

  • within the last month, a true likeness of you and of your full head
  • It should be in colour, not black and white, against a light grey or cream background
  • In good condition, not damaged, creased, torn or marked
Hope this will help

I got my photo licence back but I lost 3 months which was due to expire Oct this year.

Don't renew it too early if you are not in a hurry.

Clubbing benefits!

The bonus of frequent renewal for the over 70's will be that if you are ever challenged about being admitted to night clubs for being under age you will have an up to date photo to show them!
