Resonator delete: straight pipes, H pipes or X pipes?

My M177 (performance exhaust valves open)is louder than my old M156

Can you upload a video of the valves opened and closed. If possible.

Is the M177 as deep sounding as the M156.

I find the more modern TT AMG exhaust tones really nice, but not as deep tone as the 156. Also not a fan of the pops and bangs that can be tuned to the more modern Amg's.

It's a good thing really as all variants have a different exhaust sound. With mods here and there they can be made to suit the individuals taste.

Ill try and do a video later
Yes it is deeper tone than the M156
The pops and crackles are only in S+

Ok, I wouldn't have thought that personally.
I also think an exhaust note can sound so much different in the vehicle than from outside of the vehicle.

Regarding the exhaust note I find my w212 6.2 sounds different in the S S+ and M.

Having owned all 3 engines, the m156 really sounds superb, I do really like the 5.5TT mechanical sound from the engine a lot, as you rev it too and it is beastly at the exhaust end as the mufflers etc try to stop the pops and you get these massive bangs escaping. The 4.0l is tamer and does lack the depth but when mated to a performance exhaust it is superb at the rear end and I'm a huge fan of the "synthetic" pops and bangs, and whips and crackles on up and down shifts that the new AMGs (but pre PPF) do because they add an extra dimension of sound, but can see why others want a more natural sound. Overall my favourite exhaust was on the 2.0l 45 I had for a while, it was hugely entertaining and so easy to make it misbehave as the engine has so little power that you need a few shifts to get to the speed limit and that's 3 lots of whip cracks on each upshift which is perfect for an immature child like me and felt the 4.0l c63 needed to be worked much harder to pop and crackle in comparison. The downside of the 45 I had is I used to get a lot of aggro from other drivers 😅, would be tailgated regularly and raced etc.

When standard, I would say the M177/8, M157 and M156/9 are all similarly deep sounding. Again when standard, I would also say that the M157 and M177/8 sound more aggressive than the M156, being louder and harder sounding especially on a cold start.

Once modified though it gets a little different to compare like with like, and both the tone and volume of the M156 changes. Ore than the M157 and M177/8 when tinkered with - probably influenced by the presence of the turbochargers.

I would say the thing that sets the M156 apart - when it comes to exhaust note - is the vocal range: it can go from deep down low baritone to surprisingly high pitched shriek at the top end. That’s a party trick that the other AMG V8 engine’s can’t do.

Agreed on the M156 of your post. Like said on a previous post, the exhaust note changes with what gear setting the car is in and what rpm the car is at, especially down changes. Only going by videos the M156 sounds deeper and more chunky to me of that of the TT engined Amg's. I personally find the TT exhaust note higher picthed, but not as deep sounding as the 156 variant.

I've had both an H-pipe & straight pipes in place of the resonator on my N/A M113, the straight pipes give the true V8 sound imo, I much prefer it that way, you get the proper V8 gurgle, an X-pipe smooths the V8 chop so you loose that gurgle. An X-pipe will add a couple of bhp at the top end, an H-pipe a couple in the mid range, hardly noticeable tbh. Turbos negate any scavenging effect you'll get from an X-pipe anyway.

Here's mine apologies for the video
1st warm valves open comfort
2nd valves open S+
3rd valve's closed comfort
I will add a cold start shortly

Cold start valve's open

I actually like the later part of the video. Is it with valves closed, sounds more meaty for me personally. All sound super, but the first two options just a little less meaty. Can never get the real sound from a video in my opinion, it has to be in person to really appreciate it. That cold start is loud lol. 😁👍

Yes after the crackles the valve's were closed which to be fair is still load but the previous is very load as is the cold start 😄

It's not a totally different engine, it's a big capacity V8. The general difference applies across the board.

Have you got a clip of your car with straight pipes?
That mustang engine is a flat plane crank V8, whereas the V8s in discussion are cross plane crank V8s. Sorry but there is a significant difference.

Missed a bit with the weed killer 😉

Great sound though! 😁

Please don't try and school me when you're wrong.

The GT350 and GT500 use the Voodoo flat-plane. The Mustangs in the video are standard GT models with the regular Coyote cross-plane.

Detailed knowledge of Mustangs aside, if you really know your V8s it's plain to hear from the sound that they are both cross-plane engines...

Sorry, not sorry.

Well I honestly don't know on this so certainly wasn't trying to school anyone 😁
