2004 E320cdi Estate S211
Hi Forum,
I am interested to find out if it is just my car or do others suffer with abnormal road noise.
My E320 Avantgarde Estate (2004) seems to have had an increase in road noise latley, i noticed it first when heading to and from the South of France a couple of weeks ago.
My current tyres are Michelin 245/45/17 and i am going to replace the front ones soon with some YOKAHAMA Decibels, which are designed to reduce road noise from performance tyres. Anyone have any experience of these?
Would be good to hear from fellow S211 owners if they have unusual road noise.
I don't think there is anything else i should consider, checked wheel bearings etc, and the MB dealer reckons in their experience it is always tyres!
Any advice or guidance appreciated before i commit to new front tyres.

I've often put it down to tyres and there are some brands which are noticeably noisier than others. However, I've started noticing sections of road lately on which the car is almost silent, so a lot of the noise surely has to be down to road surface too?

I find tyres tend to make more noise as they approach the end of their life as there is less tread block left. I always thought Michelin were one of the better makes for noise, but as you say the fronts are getting ready for replacement, this might explain it.

I changed to Michelin pilot sport 3's last year and I find them much better than the Continentals MB fit to their cars. They are definately quieter and last longer, but I also think the road surface is a key factor. The roads up here are poor and my car sounds noisy all the time. As soon as I go South and drive on newer smoother tarmac, they are very quiet.

+1 for Michelin. Mine had Conti's as well, but soon changed them to Michelins. These are definitely quieter and last longer.

I live in the South, I always find the roads smoother in Wales! Not been to Scotland for a long time now, but have relatives in Invernesshire so might do a trip one day!

Driving in Scotland is great fun. I love it.

Be careful on the A9, there is some very bad surface on it.

I did a 250 round trip yesterday and noticed how noisy the tyres were & i have good tread all round (conti sport 3) cruising is fantastic but when stopping & starting engines noise lets it down also.

In both my S211's there has been rear tyre road noise regardless of tyre make, and to some degree, tyre size, (though larger/wider/lower profile is usually worse).

I expected better from a premium car when I changed from a SAAB, however, the SAAB had an acoustic loadspace cover (solid/folding) whereas the E has nothing but the fabric cover.

I read somewhere that the low floorspace in estates contributes to the problem as trying to get maximum carrying capacity can be at the expense of the ability to insulate.

I Have terrible road noise on my e320 cdi. I have just changed the rear tyres to Yokohama c drive 235/45/17. The noise has not gone ! The front tyres are dunlops and are very low so I am going to replace them with the same tyre and I will let you know. I hope its the fact that they are low on tread as It really does my head in.

I think it's more to do with lack of a solid, sound deadening cover allowing noise to transfer, in addition, estates are always a less rigid bodyshell so transfer more noise via sheet metal vibration.

I find Mercedes to be OK on road noise and since rustproofing my car definitely found it quieter, but found a C6 to be eerily quiet in comparison, even though the standard wheels are 18".

I am looking at these tyres from YOKAHAMA. I am not advertising the distributor but they provide a good overall assessment of this particular model of tyre from YOKAHAMA.

Noise??

You wanna try a 100 mile motorway trip in a 110 Defender! :(

Ive got Conti 3 on all my cars. No noise problems at all. All my cars are on Eibach springs and bilstein shocks too. Old springs and shocks also contribute to road noise.

I have Pirelli P Zeros and there is no noise problem even though the roads are dreadful round here. I find the road surfaces get better with distance from the South East myself.
