SL350 but miss my SL500
My SL roof has seen some action this week and I noticed some noises.

I checked out a thread about fixing a noisy SL roof, the advice being to buy some lubricant (part number A000 989 36 60) from MB so I trotted of to the local Main dealer.

The lubricant titled Spezial-Gleitmittel, Fluid (special sliding compound, lubrication oil) comes in a 1fl,oz bottle (about the size of the eye drops bottles and will set you back £32. I spoke to the resident roof specialist who told me that instead they now use Auto Glym Bumper Care to treat the seals which, at £6 is significantly cheaper and comes in a bottle six times the size.

He did however tell me that they use a cleaning fluid first, prior to the application of the bumper car product. (Part Number A 005 989 1971 - cleaner for glass - metal - plastic - lacquers/paint £20).

So, now armed with a bottle of the cleaning fluid and a bottle of auto glym I intend to clean and treat all of the rubber seals and lube up the mechanism with Silicone Grease.

Hopefully this will sort the roof out for this year at least.

An update,

I've just spent the last hour putting the roof up and down, cleaning and treating all of the seals.

I must admit, the chap at MB gave me a freebee on the lubricant, told me it would go on the warranty - MIRRAS and RICHARD said on the SL Roof thread that it was fab and I can say that they are not wrong. Using the cleaning fluid I cleaned all the seals first then applied the lubricant and now, all the seals look great. It spreads realy easily and this being a sunny day the rubber was nice and soft and easily massaged.

I applied to lubricant to all of the rubber seals around the doors, windows and boot and they all look refurbished. I think its supposed to be an anti-mould treatment, it certainly cleaned away any green looking mould on the rear quarterlights.

Job looks a good one. Next time I shall try the autoglym bumper care product.

My bet is that MB fluid is Krytox. One of the best lubricants and antisqueak agents known to man.

Do a search. VW used it to "fix" early Eos hard top seals. Stopped the seals from pinching and leaking. It really is the dux de lux.

Do a search.....

I'd be using it. The spray is the best; ssit and that's it.

VW Part Number G 052 172 A2

For all the proper stuff costs please don't use Bumper Care... it dries much more quickly and also seems to gather dust and dirt. I use BC on our Astra and Fiesta door seals but would never consider using it on the SL.

Interesting you say that, as mentioned in my thread, this is what the main dealer experts use and say gives better results!

Wait and see then......then let us know.

Krytox does not attract dust you can see.

Not saying your wrong, but interesting that you say that. I certainly would'nt argue that the MB stuf (Krytox you call it) is the best thing since sliced bread.

Tell you what, I'll use the Autoglym on my wifes CLK as she will change that in 2 years and the Krytox on my SL!

Further to my last, wonder if anyone has sourced some Krytox outise of MB. I've just googled it and there are a variety of links to Krytox products.

There is a VW part number above, but I would use the Benz Stuff.......

I did all mine twice over with that gummi phledge Its supposed to be good ??
