Does this have "us" down to a tee (or should I say tea)?

England is an irritating and insular country full of overweight, binge-drinking, reality TV addicts, a new guide warns tourists.

But in the new Rough Guide to England, the English are also hailed as a nation of animal-loving, tea-drinking charity donors who love nothing better than forming an orderly queue.

Gone, it seems, is the image of a genteel country awash with Englishmen politely tipping their bowler hats, groping through the London fog and being kinder to pets than kids.

The writers confess to bafflement over the quirky English, concluding that of the 200 countries the guide reviews there is none "so fascinating, beautiful and culturally diverse yet as insular, self-important and irritating as England."

They said the English are proud of their multi-culturalism and are united by one thing -- their sense of humour.

But there are constant contradictions. In a country priding itself on patriotism, they have a Scottish Prime Minister, an Italian football coach and a Greek married to the Queen.

They are gently mocked as voracious consumers of celebrity chit-chat and "as a glance at the tabloid newspapers will confirm, England is a nation of overweight, binge-drinking reality TV addicts."

I would argue the binge drinking, as you get older you seem unable to drink as much:D :D Obviously refers to the yoof of our society:p

I started a thread similar to this last month and it was locked with in 3 posts.

That might be because it hasn't yet descended into a political diatribe :)

Social comment, along with lorries overtaking, falcons, etc, still seems to be OK.

Ah - just realsied that this should probably have gone into "Off Topic". If someone would be so good as to move it.....

It mentions ' multi culturalism and scottish prime minister " but it's not Political ? Do I have a different definition of politics than everybody else ?

Which edition of the rough guide is this?

I have one of the older ones (7 or 8 years old now) and I think I definetly want to read this one!!

I haven't read the guide but it sounds like the sort of marketing aimed at getting some publicity.
I'd say that there must be 60M different views and opinions as to how it is made up. The UK is far from perfect but where is? On balance, I'll take it the way it is.
