Rough idea of repair costs

If you`re going to do this,is best if you spray the whole car.Just went through that

Very true.....will have to see what quotes I get. Last time I had a car sprayed (my XJ40) that cost around 3K for the paintwork. Though I also had a load of panels replaced at the time. We'll have to see I think.

What spec do you have inb your car, does it have leather aircon etc?

It's a 300TE in Artic White (1991, slightly later early model with wood trim on the doors).

Spec wise, no leather, air con or cruise. She does have the 7 seat option (which I have no use for :) ), all round electric windows, Walnut, as opposed to Zebrano wood trim, sunroof and the standard W124 features.

Granted, she's not a high spec 300TE, but, I don't want to sort out the blemishes to make money, just to make me happy. I don't intend to get rid to be honest as it's the ideal family car at the moment :).

That actually works rather well....how are they fastened?
On the ones I had [ eurocar parts] there were clips you bent over the wheel arch lip. I only used these to locate the wheel arch covers in place while I drilled 3 holes in the arch lip for self tapping screws- the arch covers came with predrilled holes for this. You must use a good specialist metal /chrome finish primer [got mine in B and Q] to get the spray coat to stick to the chrome finish. You can do all the spraying--off car which helps to achieve a good even finish.

I can see your point there, however, the car is Artic White, a nice flat colour that still holds a brilliant shine, and has not oxidised like so many white finishes can. I'm hoping a localised repair can be acheived. I think Metallics are a lot harder to match, so respraying the car is sometimes the only option here.

Whites are very difficult to match as there are so many shades. Good luck with whatever route you take.:)

Be interesting to see. My old 200TE had had some work done on the rear offside wing at some point. Under certain light you could see the colour difference and where the sprayer had feathered in the finish. I'll be honest, I didn't notice it until a few months into owning it, so the finish was pretty good in fairness. Will take photos of the before and after shots as and when this occurs. I am thinking March/April time, after the worst of the winter has moved on.

The problem with wheel arch repairs is that the whole wing will need to be painted and possibly the adjacent panels will need to be blended in aswell. i.e. bonnet, doors, tailgate to get a good colour match

A good painter will be able to go in and out of a panel and leave little, if no, trace

On a W124 the rust normally attacks the bottom of the wing. I've had thirty-odd repairs done where the bottom of the wing was cut away, a repair section made up and welded in, and the repair filled & painted. It's easy enough to paint up to the swage line and lose the repair if you're good. By contrast, if you paint the whole wing it will always be obvious

Unless the paintwork is really bad, it might be worth going to get it detailed to bring back the colour and the shine as this will save you the full cost of a respray?
